Anyone got any recommendations?

Nothing outlandish; just someone who looks well dressed, stylish and well put together.

Not a 20 year old supermodel wearing edgy stuff....just...nicely dressed grown ups!

I click on these hashtags:

#mumstyle
#dresslikeamum
#fashionover30
#fashionover40

Then whatever style you like, or store e.g. #casual, #zara #leopardprint etc

There are about 30 UK mums I follow, who post their daily ootd

@40notfrumpy
@myworldat40
@backofthewardrobe70
@the_naughtyfortydiaries
@rachelthehat
@hikinghomeinheels

These are ones I follow who appear to be normal women and not supermodels, and shop in normal shops :-)

I’m an Instagram addict and follow literally hundreds, but in recent months I’ve realised most of the style and fashion people are ‘hate follows’: people who just make you roll your eyes and whose posts I’d certainly never ‘like’, but who may just be wearing something interesting. Even then, I never swipe up for their affiliate links but always circumvent them through GoogleGrin.

Stories is really helping me edit the list of people I follow. Once they start talking it’s very clear who has genuine star quality (Does My Bum Look Forty) and who are just rich, thick and narcissistic. Esther Coren is trying very hard to re-invent herself as an influencer but is so very annoying to watch. It’s a huge shame as her writing style is fabulous and funny, I think. Peony Lim is very beautiful but so inarticulate for someone who claims to have a First from the Courtauld. Anneli Bush creams her pants at her own reflection daily, but her 50,000 followers seem to garner fewer than a hundred ‘likes’ for her posts. Brands need to learn something about digital consumers because following someone really doesn’t equate with actually liking them or being influenced by them.

That rant aside, the two IGers who have ever managed to genuinely influence me are Belinda of the Workwear Edit (found whilst lurking on here, and responsible for my Massimo Dutti addiction) and Monika Goes to Work (I love her Ted Baker party skirts worn to her office. She must be a legend there amongst all the men in charcoal suits).

MM18 · 01/09/2018 10:52

Sorry, need to add to my rant. Nothing sets off my ‘stupid wanker’ radar like a like to know it link. You’re really not that important that I’m going to click on a whole host of extra links for you, dumbo.

Snoopychildminder · 01/09/2018 10:55

@Finley_fox she always looks fab (and doesn’t dress in £300 tshirts and £500 jeans!) its all affordable high street stuff x

teta · 01/09/2018 10:59

Gosh MM18, your post is nasty and vitriolic.

MM18 · 01/09/2018 11:13

Sorry Teta, I probably have gone over the top but I really think Instagram has changed horribly for the worse since professional influencers came on the scene with their fakery. My friends feel the same so I’m not alone.

MM18 · 01/09/2018 11:16

Influencers haven’t crept into the art history and artefacts sectors I follow yet so it’s probably best to look at beautiful things, not beautiful people!

1frenchfoodie · 01/09/2018 13:09

Thanks for the monika goes to work recommendation MM18 - I’ve a corporate job and think I can really learn from her use of colour!

Grace32 · 01/09/2018 14:16

doesmybumlook40 is great ... I also love myfashionable40s, susiesoso and dana_andtheredshoes

MakeItStopNeville · 01/09/2018 14:21

I thought MM18’s post was pretty on the button and wasn’t vitriolic at all (except for maybe the rich, thick and narcissistic line 😄).

teta · 01/09/2018 14:27

I don’t object to the dislike of influencers. I’m not impressed by many of them too. It’s the unnecessary of use of words I’ve only ever read in in poor fiction written by male authors who are obsessed by panty droppers and the like. If I’m the only one to object at this terminology written by another woman?
Its a sad indictment of today’s world and women.

Yes, DMBL40 still manages to feel authentic, though so many of them now are wearing the same things. It is getting harder to find people who aren't just salespeople. I struggle most with the rich mums of Instagram with their motivational hashtags, faux worries and "ordinary people" rubbish. More likely to find inspiration by hashtag or back to good old Pinterest which I am rediscovering with new eyes.

ThoughtForFood · 01/09/2018 15:40

Erica Davies is great for style advice. Love her house too!

onemouseplace · 01/09/2018 16:08

Style wise I probably like Little Spree and the Wear&Where ladies the best.

I do like Erica, but she dresses for a completely different shape to me. DMBL40 is entertaining, but is also a completely different shape and such a fashion schizophrenic that she overwhelms me a bit.

I still have a soft spot for Laura Fantacci but can't afford a single thing she posts any more. I am fascinated by her new best chum Deborah Brett though - her lifestyle seems amazing and doesn't come across as fake, that is genuinely her day to day life.

AtHomeInFrance · 01/09/2018 16:13

If you like a lovely house, look at Simply the nest. A bit of reality in the crazy world of Instagram hype. Full time working mother of 3 who is renovating her beautiful home herself. Very inspirational. I much prefer the people who actually do things/buy things to those who just "ask for recommendations" and then wait for freebies - it gives a feeling that it is attainable by other normal people.

AtHomeInFrance · 01/09/2018 16:20

@onemouseplace - if you ever leave Mumsnet, please can I have your name? So lovely!

WipsGlitter · 01/09/2018 17:27

Blossoming Birds
All That's Pretty
A Life to Style

Are all fairly normal.

Also like Erica Davies.

I also wonder about Anelli Bush. She seems very sweet but the sheer volume of free stuff she is sent is staggering.

I also follow WIT / Petro / Deborah Brett for escapism.

ImTheOnlyOneWhoDoes · 01/09/2018 17:31

Wearsmymoney is my current style muse. She has expensive taste in shoes, but balances it with excellent H&M jeans and skirts.

Clionba · 01/09/2018 20:06

Does my bum look 40 goes for a lot of floor length floral dresses, golden goose trainers, Gucci bags etc, so I wouldn't say it's every day or particularly casual. Maybe Susie So So or others listed above.
