Down Jacket AW18/19

I know that down/feather jackets are a contentious fashion choice* however my man-made-fibre padded jacket makes me sweat like crazy, even on the coldest of days with minimal layers underneath it. Whereas my OH’s down jacket is just perfect - crucial for me with menopause looming on the horizon gulp

The Zara jacket I have (pics attached) is up for replacing due to general grubbiness that won’t wash/dry-clean out & the sweating issue and I can’t find an alternative anywhere with the same level of detail/styling so was hoping for some suggestions …

Are there any filings that don't cause profuse sweating?

(*as a leather wearing/meat eater I am fully aware of the methods by which down is harvested and it is a mental wrestle, believe me).

I'm looking for a down jacket this year too.
I was way too cold last year and it makes me miserable, Im looking for guaranteed warmth for around £100 or less. I will buy the best I can afford.
Currently looking at uniqlo down jackets.
Superdry have lots of lovely colours but the style I like I think might be too thin for me. Also is it for teenagers?
Watching with interest for any other suggestions

OH has a down Uniqlo (v lightweight) gillet & swears by it, I haven't looked at this season's ladies.

Like the Superdry jackets but its just the branding on them that puts me off ... Hmm

Also following, the Uniqlo Down ones always looks so comfy

I love my Monsoon down coat, which was bought at an Outlet sale a couple of years ago. Just had a look online and can't see it now.

This henri lloyd is £79.99 with free postage? Not sure if it's too long for you though.

Land's End do some really good value down jackets and coats.
Not high fashion but very practical and warm. I've had one of their coats for years and it's fantastic.

Most down now comes as a by-product of the meat industry so if you eat duck no cruelty issues. It annoys me that we feel guilty for purchasing a natural, sustainable, biodegradable item over one manufactured from oil product, using lots of energy, which is then synthetic and will pollute our oceans. I am very sad that Fat Face no longer uses feathers.... How about Joules? I got a lovely down jacket from them a couple of years ago in the sale. My husband has a Superdry jacket, he is 52!

HCHQ · 30/08/2018 12:24

Olderthan ... I never thought about the natural vs synthetic debate but you're right. Will check out Joules, thanks.

Joules to the rescue ... possibly

GOSWAY Chevron Quilt Padded Jacket with Hood £169

But its a synthetic filling so may be just as sweaty as the original ... Hmm

Another vote for Lands End quality but their styling is generally a bit Michelin man.

Boden also usually do a long down and a short down come winter but not sure if available yet - maybe late Sept for their main winter stuff? I have a short navy Boden one which is about 7 or 8 years old. It has started shedding the odd feather by now but keeps me toasty and is a flattering shape, minimising the Michelin woman look.... HTH Smile

I have bought 2 down jackets from uniqlo so far n loved them both. They r very light n comfy only thing is i wanted one n it was never the same.. though the instructions said washable

butlerswharf · 30/08/2018 15:59

I have a couple from Uniqlo too. I love them. Better than my Zara one.

MayFayner · 30/08/2018 16:49

I have a Lands End one that’s not Michelin man-y at all, in fact I can fit it under my LK Bennett wool coat for when it’s really cold. I wore it most of last winter on its own and it was great. It will do me again for this year. I got it in the sale for £50 iirc 👍

I also have a Patagonia one that was £££ although it’s more of a parka really. It has many years life left in it, and so it should!

I think down is ok as long as you plan to wear the coat for a few seasons.

Not particularly stylish but I got this superdry one today. I know superdry is a bit teenage but I don’t care, there’s no obvious labels, it’s super warm and cosy like wearing a duvet. It’s very lightweight which I like.

I had the laurel duvet coat from monsoon, £105.00 at the moment, had for about five years, very warm & cosy.

Peanutbuttercups21 · 30/08/2018 18:09

I bought a very warm, beautiful Esprit one (down, belted, with teddy fleece in the hood), a dream to wear. Toasty but not sweaty.

I have also got the lightweight fitted hooded jacket (down again) it weighs nothing, very soft and warm.

I wear down and leather (am not ethical) but find them very durable. I have a leather jacket that I have been wearing for 15 years, not tatty at all. I can see my down jackets lasting too. My last down jacket lasted 10 years.
