Straightening brush.. Are they worth it and which one?

I have thick wavy/curly hair and I really never have enough time for straightners. I also don't like how they dry out my hair.
Thanks to MN, I got a lovely haircut last year, but it only works if my hair is relatively straight.
I've read some good things about straightening brushes - how they don't give you poker straight hair and don't damage your hair that much. Are these claims true and which one would you recommend?

TIA :)

Oh and I have tried the curly girl method and didn't like it :)

I've just ordered one, funny enough. A Miropure one from Amazon for £14.99 which seems dirt cheap but it has good reviews.

I have very frizzy hair but not very thick and it straightens pretty easily with GHDs. I want to cut down on my straightener use as my hair is getting so damaged.

I have the best straightening brush that actually holds down your hair while it straightens. The Instyler Glossie.

100% recommend it. I had one of the other type before that I ended up giving to charity.

Thanks all!

evilharpy do you think the Miropure one would work on thick hair. GHDs struggle with my hair... 14.99 is tempting!

Dina that almost seems like a straightner as it holds the hair down. I wonder if it causes more damage than the usual straightening brushes because of that. What was wrong with the others that you tried? Just trying to understand why it didn't work for you :)

No idea but I shall report back when it arrives and I try it out!

DinaCaliente · 30/08/2018 10:24

The other one seemed like I was brushing only the top of my hair and therefore only straightening the top layer. Also, it didn't heat up very well and took ages.

The Instyler you don't even need to section your hair really, and it works really quickly.

I occasionally use my dd's straightening brush on my wavey/frizzy hair. It has a very nice effect. Not poker-straight, as with tongs, but a softer, straighter wave. It's also much more pleasant than using the blow drier.

Bluewidow · 30/08/2018 10:37

I don't like straighteners as I don't like the flat straight look. I like the straight blow dried look and can only achieve this with a brush . Defo worth it and far easier than straighteners. Plus you will remember to turn them off so won't risk burning the house down ... Another reason I can't use them.

MumNeedsTea · 30/08/2018 11:28

Thanks Dina

Jelly and Bluewidow can I please ask which brand of the straightening brush you use?

Tried mine out this morning and liked it. It transformed a head of pure frizz to a nice smooth do - not poker straight but also not as flat and lifeless as it is with straighteners. It did take longer though as I had to do it in smaller sections. I think it'll probably be less damaging too.

Bought one off Amazon, it was ok-ish. I have very thick curly/wavy/wild hair. Started smoking so I returned it. I'd say GHDs definitely better. Saying that now I have my hair put in big curlers at the hairdressers which help smooth out the frizzzzz!

JellySlice · 31/08/2018 22:52

This.

Ive used babyliss for years.

kello · 02/09/2018 16:21

Babyliss big hair is what you need. It's amazing! I have the same type of hair as you.

GinandGingerBeer · 02/09/2018 17:24

I have the BBH which dries the hair at the same time (you have to do it either air dry it first or give it a blast with a hairdryer first though or you'd be there all day)
But I don't use it much now I've got one of these https://www.boots.com/babyliss-hot-brush-sheer-volume-10233167?cmmmc=bmmmGoogle+Boots+PLAsAs--BAU---C=%28GB%3AWhoop%21%29+Boots+Shopping+-+Category+-+Electrical+Beauty+-+Tablet%28GB%3AWhoop%21%29+Babyliss&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIhISbk9yc3QIV7LDtCh0yywK9EAQYCSABEgLzhfDD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
It's to use on dry hair but it's really good, like barrel brush straightener I guess! 3 heat settings. I have frizzy/curly hair and it leaves it looking like I've had it dried by my hairdresser using a barrel brush.

I can go to bed with it washed and just run this over it in the mornings.

MumNeedsTea · 04/09/2018 08:52

Thanks all! For those recommending the Babyliss big hair - I used to have one, but it's stopped working now. I never got on with it actually... It made my hair look noce when I used it, but the moment I step out my hair used to become poofy. No idea where I was going wrong Confused

Update: I really really like mine. I have a babyliss big hair which I love but it gives quite a different look. I think I'll end up using the straightening brush more often than the GHDs. And it was such a bargain!

FairytaleOfSkegness · 04/09/2018 09:41

I have the jml one and it is fantastic. Really quick to style my hair in the morning and gives a long lasting glossy/ smoothness but isn't too poker straight. I have very thiclose hair too

FairytaleOfSkegness · 04/09/2018 09:44

Urgh I mean thick hair

Ignoramusgiganticus · 04/09/2018 09:55

This battery non cord one is great and actually works if you want straight, but not poker straight hair.

MumNeedsTea · 04/09/2018 09:59

Thanks evirharpy and fairytail.. Wikl check them out!

Notquiteagandt · 04/09/2018 10:25
