Is this really office wear?

It’s a while since I worked in a setting that demanded smart business wear so I could be out of touch but this months Woman and Home magazine has recommended this silver lurex dress with matching ankle boots as a great day to night look. Really?

It's not appropriate in my opinion.

But then again, what I've seen in the office wear sections of shops is often not very work wear appropriate at times. I treat each item as I tell studnets when doing the back to school shop: just because a shop puts an item in a section, doesn't make it appropriate.

One was a thin chiffon top with a long tear drop cut out to under the boob level. Sure it was a thin drop so not showing loads but was still top of tummy and would mean not wearing a bra. I'd be a bit Hmm if anyone thought a semi see through top with a cut out at the boobs was appropriate.

No! Ridiculous! Anything sparkly or shiny is not suitable for work IMO.

Although I can imagine some French women might wear it (I work on the Franco-Swiss border) as their attire is more risqué.

ShirleyPhallus · 29/08/2018 08:13

Day to night doesn’t mean office wear though

I’d assume they meant to wear from lunch to bars in the evening on a Saturday

AsAProfessionalFekko · 29/08/2018 08:15

Oven ready turkey?

I've worked in the city, media and charity... No no and nooooo.

TheDowagerCuntess · 29/08/2018 08:17

Well it's not my taste, but it's a damn sight better than a lot of outfits I see at work. Honestly - streets ahead.

treaclesoda · 29/08/2018 08:20

It's pretty shiney but, working in a very formal workplace a few years ago one of our younger staff turned up one day in a strapless boob tube, so nothing surprises me these days.

notacooldad · 29/08/2018 08:21

Depends on your office I guess.
I worked in one once where everything went from ultra short mini skirts and wacky hairstyles to the men wearing flip flops. However i know that wouldn't be normal ioffice attire fo rmost people.

Eminybob · 29/08/2018 08:24

If you work in the offices in the TV series Suits, then maybe. If you work in he real world, then no.

Unsure123123 · 29/08/2018 08:39

Wow it's a bit of a stretch even with a jacket on. It's the material not the style that's questionable. It's not something you'd find in my work place but honestly it's better than some of the outfits people wear to my work place. At least you can't see up it, down it or through it 😁

Loonoon · 29/08/2018 08:48

ShirleyPhallus you are quite right but I’ve attached the blurb which accompanied the phot which certainly suggests this is office wear.

I’d love to see what the writer who wrote this was wearing - I’m willing to bet it wasn’t anything like this!

Twaddle.

But they get paid to feature items like that so they will shoehorn anything in - appropriate or not.
It's hideous - and I would get laughed off campus if I turned up in that.

It is semi formal here - so I wear smart dresses with tights and boots in autumn, or suit type trousers with a nice top - but rarely a suit. IYSWIM.

Deathraystare · 29/08/2018 14:44

It pains me. Everytime i look on a site and put in workwear - you get up the most stupid tops and dresses - unless you work in a club of course - as in dancing on stage!

Deathraystare · 29/08/2018 14:50

I went for an interview at Virgin once. I reckoned they would be a fun company - fairly relaxed dress code. I wore a green skirt suit and was certainly told quite firmly that they have a strict code of black suits!

SmilingButClueless · 29/08/2018 14:56

I can’t decide whether it reminds me more of Bacofoil or sci-fi.

Can’t imagine anyone in my office wearing it other than for fancy dress.

CottonSock · 29/08/2018 14:57

Hahaha.

Fatted · 29/08/2018 14:58

All I can think of is that song Shiney off Moana!!

Definitely wouldn't get away with something like that where I work!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 29/08/2018 14:58

Where I used to work there was no dress code until the hot summer that the air conditioning failed, then they brought in the requirement that navels had to be covered.

Monday55 · 29/08/2018 14:59

Looks suitable if your job is 'Tin man' or a walking disco ball.

SinglePringle · 29/08/2018 15:00

Meh. I’d wear it to work with a black jumper and black heeled ankle boots. Senior manager level here. No one would bat an eyelid.

EvilRingahBitch · 29/08/2018 15:01

In a non-sparkly fabric I think it would be bang-on for workwear, boots included for more fashion-forward types. In silver lurex, not so much.

I agree with a pp that I’ve known French women who’d happily wear it to the office though.

Sitranced · 29/08/2018 16:00

"glide straight into the office"

in the morning after the night before maybe. Hmm

MeanTangerine · 29/08/2018 18:43

Looks sweaty Envy

delphguelph · 29/08/2018 20:01

Serious fanjo steam on the chair wearing that.

Home time yet?

EnidButton · 29/08/2018 20:17

"I want a two page spread on office wear for the first Autumn edition. Find some things that are below the knee with sleeves and not too much cleavage. You have until lunchtime to get it in."

So they grabbed anything with sleeves, as pickings are slim, are shoehorned them in. Basically.

I kind of like it in an 80's vibe kind of way but you'd be side eyed out of most offices.
