My skin - advice needed

I'm not much of a high maintenance girl, but lately my skin has been weird. Probably my age and my hormones (in my 40s), but I've come to the conclusion that what used to work (very basic and unfussy skin care routine - almost non-existent, actually) is no longer cutting it.

For the past year, I have been quite spotty (mostly chin and jawline - which I understand is linked to hormones), but now I have general spottiness, whilst being really dry and rough in patches (like my cheeks). I had been using a face wash regularly, which I'm now thinking, despite its ayurvedic claims, might be too harsh and have dried out my skin. I've also been using a microfibre mitt to wash with - and have just been using plain water since the dry skin appeared, followed by an organic facial oil.

Recommendations would be lovely. I'm about to start teacher training so, I still need something minimal. Small budget, but I don't mind paying a little more if it's going to work. In the past, I have used the Liz Earle hot cloth range including toner and moisturiser, which worked then, but it's been a while.

I'm a big fan of GOW and The Ordinary products but there's such a huge range you'll need to do a bit of research first. Cult Beauty have good guidance notes or Victoria health so a brilliant email service where you outline your skin type/problems and a rough budget (ie whether you're looking at £8-10, £10-20 or any price for each product) & they'll message you a regime.
I have similar sounding skin and double cleanse with cetaphil then hot cloth and use Hyralauic acid, Azelalic acid & Niamincide (spellings all similar if not exact Wink) and it's made a big difference to my skin.

Mymadworld do you use all these straight after each other?

Mymadworld · 29/08/2018 07:01

Hi @newname43

I've copied and pasted the reply I got from Victoria Health in response to my emailing my skin type (dry patches, spots around jawline so v.similar to op) . I would say choose a different moisturiser as I don't rate theirs and it doesn't have any spf which you need using the acids.

AM: Niacinamide; Hyaluronic acid; Natural Moisturising Factors
PM: Hyaluronic acid, Azelaic acid; Argan Oil

Niacinamide helps to normalize sebum production and will help reduce breakouts.
Hyaluronic acid helps to hydrate skin – dehydrated leads to tight feeling skin and inflammation
Natural Moisturising Factors is a non clogging oil-free daily moisturizer for surface hydration.
Azelaic acid – a multi-tasking serum to unclog pores, smooth rough bumpy skin, encourage micro-exfoliation and much more.
Argan oil helps restore natural lipids in skin and has some anti-acne benefits.

I never had teenage spots but always had dry skin. I got rosacea in my 40s and found prescriptions for Soolantra and anti biotics really helped. I don't have dry skin anymore.

Hey, I have the same problem with the skin, I did not use anything, only water (I mean no beauty products). Maybe because of the stressful lifestyle, with kid and the job and the husband to look after my skin conditions started to change. Recently, I got recommended by a friend of mine to try night repair serum, check it out(helped me, perhaps will help you too)-> virginic.com/collections/serums/products/night-repair-face-serum
The price is average, however I liked what it does for my skin. Also, I started to look for some natural alternatives to prepare some mask on my own, but it is so time consuming.
Wish you good luck and hope your skin will become better! let me know

I've recently developed Rosacea and after a 3 month course of antibiotics my skin is lot better but it is now really sensitive and I've become a lot more conscientious in how I treat it. I can't use some things I used to.
Currently I use micellar water to clean it and then REN anti redness serum and then Olay sensitive night cream. In the day I use Ultra sun factor 30 face sun cream and then a Pixi tinted gel as a foundation. Touch wood it is mostly quite calm now.
I've also stopped using shampoo with sulphates as I read they could aggravate sensitive facial skin.

My skin has been exactly the same this year & I’ve found vitamin E creams really make a difference. The Body Shop vitamin E range is good.

Great - thanks for all your responses so far. I'm happy for more if anyone else stumbles across this post, though.

I've just washed my face with water and the microfibre cloth and again, I can feel the dry patches, though they are slightly less dry than prior to posting. I like the sound of some of these remedies, though I have used things with some of these ingredients in the past, and it has inflamed my skin. I used to get the odd monster spot in my teens but my skin is much worse these days. Grrrr.

I think I'll have a look at the vitamin E stuff - sounds good. I usually use a Soltan facial sun cream - SPF 50, but I have a suspicion thatit blocks my pores and exacerbates the problem.
