Sorry these are stupid questions

Please can someone explain foundation / tinted moisturiser / B.B. cream etc to me? What’s the lowest coverage level as it were?

Also how if I use foundation or whatever do I need anything else for skin - primer / touche eclait etc?

And how do you pick the right colour without getting the dreaded tide mark? Do you change colour in summer??

I have fairly ok skin so have never done any of this stuff but mid 30s now so feel it may be time but too old to ask basic qs irl Blush

Depends.

There are tinted moisturisers out there with more coverage than foundation.

Generally, it goes F - TM - BB cream.

BB creams, in my experience, tend to be orange and shiny, I avoid them like the plague, but that's just my experience.

I have to change shades in the Summer because I tan easily and am at least two shades darker.

I tend to use TM, and if you skin is Ok as you say and you are in your 30s then I wouldn't go for a fun coverage foundation, there's no point.

It's all tribal and error. Lots of error.

Tinted moisturiser - lowest coverage
B.B. cream - low/medium coverage but can usually be layered
Foundation - depends on type and brand. Most give a fair to medium coverage, then you have your good coverage and then the really heavy duty stuff which is for nights out, weddings etc

You don’t NEED a primer if you have exfoliated and moisturised well enough but a primer will almost always make your foundation look better and stay on longer.

You would probably need to use a good concealer around your eyes/maybe nose area with a foundation. I perssonally hate foundation anywhere near my eyes so tend to only use concealers around my eye area

I don’t really let my face tan in the summer if I’m abroad. If I do I tend to use a B.B. cream with a light coverage and use bronzing powder to make everything look ok but it’s a total pain in the arse and I prefer to just use my usual makeup. You need to play around with colours and textures to find the perfect one!

My own personal recommendations are the concealer by collection 2000. It costs about £4 and is the BEST I have ever used and I’ve tried loads!!

Foundation wise I love double wear by Estée Lauder, pro longwear by Mac and stay matte by number 7. My preferences are good coverage and a Matt finish. I have very porcelain skin and think they suit me best.

But if you let me know your preferences - Matte or dewy, light or heavy coverage, I can probably recommend a good product!

@redrosebelle I use a collection 2000 foundation/concealer (ultimate fix) it is the best thing ever! Only £6.99, the only one i've found that covers my acne scars without looking ridiculously thick. And it stays on all day.
To the OP, something like this might be easy to use Smile

www.makeup.com/bb-cream-vs-foundation

I have tried a lot over the years. I liked naturals tinted moisturiser from boots when i was younger but now if i wear it and get too hot is melts off my face.

Ive tried Tarte, IT, Doll 10, Rimmel, Body shop, No7, superdrug and many more in variations of BB, CC and foundation. I have very oily skin and very pale with pink undertones.

My favs are
Too faced peaches and cream inc primer and setting powder, smells great, mega matte and doesnt break me out. This is medium coverage which doesnt feel cakey

Tarte Rainforest of the Sea foundation, its dewy but not too much, gets oily after a few hours, this is light to medium and buildable

Bare minerals loose powder, this is light to medium coverage and i tend to use this when im in a hurray and just want to do some xolour correction and even out skintone.

Ive found watching utube reviews very interesting and it has stopped me wasting money on some products.

I started using foundation in the last few years past my 30s otherwise I hate foundation and all the rest. Only have to use as I have lots of dark marks....is there any particular problem that you are trying to deal with. If not maybe just putting on the right moisturisers makes all the difference eg. You can get those moisturisers that are not tinted but just make you look glowy. Can't remember top of my head all of those but origins ginseng(I think) its white but changes colour to adapt to your skin is one.

In terms of foundations, bb creams etc..These are all the light dewy ones I have loved before my pigmentation problems

  • Armani maestro
  • smashbox bb water
-ysl all in one glow

Best to go to make up counters and get them tested to see if you like. Ask them if you can have sample to try out. Try to pick 3 shades of colour nearest to your skin and put a stripe of each above one jawline. Then dab each to blend in . The one that seems the blend easily to your skin colour will be your shade. You also need to find out what undertone you are- warm or cool. The makeup counter should be able to tell you that. HTH.

Forgot to mention cushion foundations give nice light dewy coverage Eg. Ysl fushion cushion, Armani cushion- I don't get on well with them because they just don't have my shade

Llamallann · 27/08/2018 21:41

My skin is very dry and I like a dewy look with a medium coverage. I have found two foundations that fit the job perfectly! Charlotte Tilbury light wonder and The Ordinary serum foundation - the latter is £5!! X

I'm having problems with my foundation sliding off or clumping, even when I use primer. It looks great when applied but doesn't last. Any ideas or suggestions?

Ellapaella · 28/08/2018 15:52

The most important thing is identifying whether you have pink or yellow undertones. Until you get this right then foundation will never really colour match properly.
I think a lot of people with fair skin assume they have pink or neutral undertones and may actually be surprised to discover they have yellow.
So basically if you never seem to get a good colour match try a foundation with a gold or yellow undertones and see if that makes the difference.
L'Oréal and bourgeois are the best high street brands for yellow undertones. The Ordinary also go a great budget foundation and have an excellent range of shades.
Is also second applying with a sponge or brush -you'll use less and it blends better.

CalonGlas · 28/08/2018 17:28

YY to The Ordinary foundations - I found both versions pretty excellent, the lighter serum one, and the fuller coverage one. The Body Shop does a great flat top buffing brush for about £12 which achieves almost identical results on me to the Hourglass foundation brush at a less reasonable £42...

Rosie1990 · 28/08/2018 17:33

If you want a dewy light coverage I'd recommend bare minerals, complexion rescue it's very light but the coverage is good (if you don't have spots) their concealer is great too. The best thing to do is go to their beauty counter and get them to match a shade.
