I love pacifica for foundation, powder and nail varnish and phb for eyeliner, eyeshadow, concealer, shampoo and conditioner. For deodorant I love Ben and Anna but lots of people seem to prefer warrior deodorant cream

superdrug has lots of cruelty free options. I believe the Revolution make up range is all, or most of it at least, vegan friendly. OTherwise they have loads of skin care and body care products in superdrug that have the leaping bunny symbol.

thedevilinablackdress · 26/08/2018 17:40

Superdrug is a good place to start. Their own brands.

Mercurial123 · 26/08/2018 17:48

Kiss My Face SPF 50 for face, Pacifica face wash, Tom's of Maine stick deodorant and gel toothpaste, M&S Autograph cosmetics they are part of the Leaping Bunny Programme, Barry M for nail polish.

Check out the website naturisimo. They sell all cruelty free brands and also cruelty free kitty website. I tend to also Google if a brand is sold in China to check. My favourite delilah.

Logical Harmony and Cruelty Free Kitty to check brands.

Decide what “cruelty-free” means for you e.g. Do you want to stick to products that have a certification only? Where do you stand on brands that don’t test products sold in Europe but do test “where required by law” (i.e. China)? Are you ok with brands that don’t test but are owned or part owned by parent companies that do test?

Content Beauty is a good retail website to look at, they indicate which products are certified cruelty-free. I’d second Naturissimo, but sadly they do stock brands which aren’t cruelty-free(e.g. Caudalie test in China and REN are owned by Unilever). Lovelula is another good retail site, but do check brands out as they sell REN (to be fair, they’ve sold REN since before they were bought by Unilever, and I would imagine it’s one of their central brands). Also Ecco-Verde for some stuff from Europe.

As for specific products.

So many cruelty-free brands are easily accessed only online, so I’ll start with things is relatively easy to find in a physical location. Barry M is good for nail varnishes, and also good because it’s so easily available, so if you need something in a hurry it’s easy to go and try it and get it. -Plumpy is a fab topcoat.. I also like Pixi for make-up and skincare as they have stands ina lot of M&S’s. Lipgloss is good, so are eyeliners, and the Retinol Tonic is brilliant. Herbivore is lovely and can be found in SpaceNK stores. They do a great range of cruelty free and vegan skincare. The charcoal soap is amazing, as is the blue clay mask. I like a little bit of Chantecaille make-up as an extra special treat, also at SpaceNK. Very pricey, but mascara is out of this world and illumination is gorgeous and lasts forever.

Otherwise, I like Evolue, Oskia, Dr Alkaitis, Alpha-H, Mad Hippie for skincare. Alba Botanical, Anadalou Naturals and Avalon Organics are all worth a punt. The Altruist is a great sunscreen. Pacifica do some lovely things too, especially make-up. Faith in Nature do great shampoos. Ere Perez do great eyeliners and lip stains.

You’ve got lots of good advice! I also recommend Superdrug as a starting point, and M&S Autograph. I’m always thrilled when I read threads like this because it means more and more people are looking at this and one day the balance will tip over.

I love skincare from Haeckels. They only test on themselves, their products are all natural and most are vegan. I especially love the soap, the face cream and the face cleanser.

The Sainsbury's own brand products I've tried also have the leaping bunny. I don't know if that applies to all their products.

Also look at (very) small companies e.g. I like Trawden Soap Kitchen on Etsy for toiletries :)

I saw a big poster in a salon the other day saying that Aveda have always been cruelty-free. They're too expensive for me so I haven't researched whether it's true.

Personally I also consider the type of packaging they use and where the products are manufactured etc. Obviously not as direct a link as testing products on animals, but animals will be affected.

TheConquestOfHappiness · 27/08/2018 10:44

Cruelty Free Kitty on Korres

All Co-op own brand toiletries and cleaning products are cruelty free. They were the first UK supermarket to go cruelty free over 30 years ago. The other big UK based ones (Sainsburys, Morrison’s, Tesco) all went cruelty free a good while ago.

Here’s a cruelty free guide to the High Street

TheConquestOfHappiness · 27/08/2018 10:49

Oh and Aveda have always been cruelty free. But they are owned by Ester Lauder now, who do test. So it depends whether that bothers you or not.

PETA for example recommend that people keep buying cruelty free brands when they are bought by companies that test other brands, as this will show the parent companies that cruelty free is a viable model. Other people say “not a penny to testing”.
