Severely Dry Hair!!

curlyhairdocare · 24/08/2018 14:05

I have naturally curly/frizzy hair which I straighten almost everyday. This along with a lot of dying Blush has caused it to become really dry and brittle.

It is so broken and frizzy at the top that it is sticks up like static. I feel like I have tried everything Confused Just wondering if anyone has any tips / recommendations for me?

There is a Curly Girls UK Facebook group which is less strict than the main group, and also concentrates on products you can buy in the UK.

Shea Moisture products which are in Superdrug and Boots are very good for curly hair.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/08/2018 16:27

My hair isn't curly, so what suits me might not suit you, but the Philip Kingsley Elasticizer mentioned below recently saved my hair after a week's holiday which had turned my hair to straw.

Put your conditioner on, any conditioner, and literally leave it for three hours whilst you watch tv one evening or do housework etc. Made a massive difference to my frizzy thick nightmare hair!

Also, blow drying before bed and straightening in the morning made it flatter and last longer when straight.

If you can afford it, a Brazilian blow dry is amazing... only way I was confident to have a bob since having a hideous bob in my teens! Straighten my hair once since having that, and don't brush or touch until next wash, blow dry and straighten. Mine is £90 for Brazilian blow dry every three months xx

Kerastase mask in the light orange tub. Then a shower cap, then a towel (you can warm a slightly damp towel in microwave or get it out the drier) and leave on as long as possible.

Thank you, currently researching all of the below products Grin Really excited to try some!

ellaV I have thought about Brazilian blow drys in the past. I've seen some deals on groupon so might just go for it.

Op U.K. I like curly girl because she trial’s products and gives honest opinions. There are sooo many good curl products out there but I would say stay away from sulphate shampoo and stay away from conditioners and shampoo containing silicone it will ruin your hair over time- that includes frizz ease products. Believe me My hair has never been better than using cg method Smile

SavoyCabbage · 24/08/2018 17:16

My dd uses tresseme for the curly girl method. The one with a picture of a coconut on it. She also sleeps with coconut oil on her hair once a week.

Her hair was like straw before the curly girl method.

I have fine straight hair but one that I swear by is egg.

A friend of mine recommended this and I wasn’t sure at first but it’s been a revaluation.

A couple of times a week I put egg onto my hair whilst it’s damp. Don’t soak your hair though. When I get in the bath, I just put my hands in the water and run them through my hair a few times before applying.

Leave the egg on for 3-5 minutes. It may feel a little strange and gross at first but rinse it out before shampooing. I use Palmers Coconut shampoo to wash it out.

Now this May sounds a little gross too but 99% of the time I wash my hair in the bath and I wasn’t sure about bathing in egg. Bizarrely it also nourishes my skin though too.

After blow drying my hair, it always feels thinker after the egg treatment. Give it a try.

Have just ordered the Hola Coco mask. My hair is not curly but the bottom half of it has been left dry after all the highlights. Will give this mask a try and if it doesn't work, they have the 30-day guarantee!

TheGoddessFrigg · 29/08/2018 14:17

Shea Moisture mask is just AMAZING> I have always had dry curly hair but it deteriorated drastically after a triple whammy of illness, steroids and menopause.

Only people with curly hair will understand- but I can actually run my fingers through my hair!

TodoDoingDone · 29/08/2018 15:26

Frigg(if I may call you that) what Shea moisture mask do you use? I just searched Amazon and lots came up.

Baxdream · 29/08/2018 16:16

A Brazilian blow dry is hair suicide if you've already got damaged hair.
I've recently started the curly girl method as I was in a similar situation. It's hard trying to embrace your curls when you've hidden them for so long but you'll certainly notice a difference in the condition. I low poo as I can't get on with only using conditioner

dudsville · 29/08/2018 21:13

My hair is thin but lots of it, about 1/5th grey, all natural colour, a natural mild curl that's more than a wave but not curly. My hair got so dry it was like straw. I now have two sulfate free shampoos, 2 heavy rich oily conditioners, a hair mask and a hair oil with a high argan percentage. I wash no more than twice a week. I rotate these and it's brought my hair back to life. I've also started cutting it myself as no matter how many times I said to the many different hairdressers that my hair can't deal with being thinned, they'd do it and within a week I'd be getting split ends. I've charged my brushes from plastic to boar bristle and I mostly finger comb. It's taken a lot to find out what works for me. I did a lot of asking around and you tubing and made a financial commitment to trying to find products rather than sticking with things I'd bought that didn't work. I even tried the keratin treatment, didn't help at all but I'm glad I tried (and glad I won't be needing to do that regularly! ).

slinkysaluki · 30/08/2018 08:29

Coconut oil on dry hair, saturate and sleep with it in then shampoo out. I have very thick coarse hair which is dry. Works wonders and it's cheap

pockledigg · 30/08/2018 09:59

My hair is very dry and prone to breaking anyway (I use straighteners, tongs etc and do not want to stop). My hairdresser did her best to finish it off 3 months ago by leaving bleach on it for way too long. I had to have 4 inches cut off immediately and the rest was a dry snapping mess - it was like a dandelion clock with bits floating off it whenever it was touched or blow dried. I have tried everything and the good news is that I found something that worked. Hyalauronic Acid. Buy a big bottle on Ebay - about £19.00 but it will last forever. Put several pumps on your damp hair after washing - dry & style as normal. Result? Strong, shiny hair. It's a bloody miracle. Great for skin too.

This is what you need. No conditioner, only apply once, so in long terms it save money and packaging, and comes in a coloured hair version too.
