Shopping in York?

Ifonlyiweretaller · 22/08/2018 11:31

I've an opportunity to go to York for a day whilst my OH goes to meetings. My wardrobe needs an update and I need to start thinking of clothes for Autumn (shudder). Anyone any thoughts?
I haven't done a day out shopping for ages and usually head to Manchester, just wondered what York is like as an alternative.

I shop there often and like it as everything is relatively close! The primark in the city centre is utterly rubbish, I'm not a huge fan of the Next or Dorothy Perkins either but there is a good big M&S, H&M, office, Zara, two New Looks, Mango etc.
I usually plan a sort of 'loop' starting at parliament street M&S(primark, Oasis and topshop are close to here if needed) , down Coney Street which takes in all the above shops and then turn and walk past Betty's to loop back past French Connection on the offchance I have won the lottery part way there Grin

I think York is great! In the centre you have a lot of chains (M&S, Next, H&M etc) but there are also shops like LK Bennett, Reiss and lots of lovely boutique clothes shops. I also think it's a lovely city to just walk around Smile.

There's also a MacArthur Glen outlet that's about a 15 minute bus ride from the city centre.

Well its a definite yes then based on those replies - thanks ladies.
Just checked and the weather's looking good for shopping too!

There's a Fenwicks too, a smallish one.

DameDoom · 22/08/2018 15:45

Fenwicks has really started to expand its womenswear in York although there is still too much Phase 8 but it's worth a look.

Some nice high street stores on Stonegate - your usual Jigsaw, Whistles and White Company, Pure Cashmere etc. but being in beautiful buildings does make a difference to the shopping experience.

Avoid Brown's at all costs unless you want to be head to toe in Windsmoor.

Try the Yorkshire Soap Co and York Coco House for little treats (Blake Street). Mannion and Co is a great spot to lunch there, but if you want something a bit different, head to Phranakhon Thai Tapas on Grape Lane - they do a lunch deal till 4 and the building is tiny and medieval. It's perfect for solo dining if your DH is in meetings.

I live in York - it's fab.

More great suggestions. Thanks for your input @DameDoom.

Thanks for the tip on Browns - Windsmoor is definitely not for me! And I second the comment about Phase 8. I loved it when it first came out, but now I find it just seems to take over everywhere and you can spot it a mile off.

The Thai tapas sounds amazing and I suspect I wont need to book as it will be a table for one Grin I'm definitely going to give that a
go.

Well I have had a lovely day in York. The city is lovely, so much to see. What a great selection of shops - I deliberately went into shops outside my normal comfort zone and ended up buying more than I should, but different to my normal style ( god u hope I wear them Grin. I also found ( but didn't purchase from) the Mulberry shop!
Genuinely lovely friendly people too.

Didn't get to the tapas bar as I was on a roll with the shopping !

Only just seen this! I live in York and was going to suggest you go down Fossgate for the vintage shops and check out the big TopShop but it sounds like you found plenty to spend your money on regardless!
