I'm looking after my prematurely pubescent niece whilst my sister is in hospital and thinking thinx period knickers could help her out. She is only eight and very shy. It would be good to get something sorted before school goes back.
Pricey so keen to hear if they are effective and what the sizing is like. She wears a girls size 10 in knickers.

They mean that you need to change your entire underwear instead of just a pad, which could be expensive and annoying if thats every few hours. Plus only available in the USA. Cant she use towels?

SoupDragon · 20/08/2018 14:45

I wouldn’t want to wear them all the time. I think they are great as a back up to w twmpon on really heavy days hint relevant for your niece!) and for tomes when a pad would be obvious (sport maybe?). I’m not sure I could use them all the time as they feel kind of icky.

I don't know if you can get them in the UK, but I had a friend post some to me from the US and they're great.

Yes, it's a bit annoying changing underwear instead of just a pad but is actually less hassle overall. And less rubbish is created.

If you buy from the US there is a hefty customs charge too.

There are different versions available in the U.K. though.

Cloth pads might be more comfy and easy to get hold of. I love the hiccups abd juice ones

Probably good for night time or as a backup for other products Or if just spending day at home. Probably not practical otherwise.

I'm trying out reusable towels myself at the moment but think they might be difficult at school.

I have a pair that are different brand but the same idea. I used a tampon and wore them on a trip recently that involved a long hike with minimal toilet facilities. Very comfortable and I felt secure knowing there would be no leaks. I have also bought my daughter 2 pairs to use in addition to pads.

what the sizing is like. She wears a girls size 10 in knickers.

I bought some as back up for night time for DD (12) and she is 6-8 in Primark pants and I bought size small. I’m a 14 and bought large.

I haven't used the Thinx brand but I have used other period pants I found on Amazon. (They were quite cheap though so maybe the Thinx ones are better.)

My thoughts:

The ones I have are quite heavily elasticated around the legs to stop any leakage. This means they give me quite severe VPL which is very visible under trousers or even tight fitting skirts. They're also high waisted and generally look a tiny bit nappy-ish. I wouldn't be seen dead wearing them in a gym changing room.

The one day I decided to use them as sole protection was a total disaster. My flow was heavier than I was expecting and the pants just couldn't cope. Never again. I wouldn't want to go any significant amount of time wearing them after I had bled into them - it just feels wet and uncomfortable.

However, they are excellent at night. I don't like wearing tampons or towels or a mooncup at night (and I suspect the mooncup might leak if I was lying horizonal the whole time). Wearing them at night means I don't need to use anything else while I'm sleeping, and then when I get up in the morning they are easily enough to catch the blood flowing down on my way to the loo. As soon as I've been to the loo in the morning I rinse out the blood and put them in the wash.

So in my view they were worth getting, but only for sleeping in.

I bought some uk.ones and they just turned out to be pants with a waterproof layer so not quite the same. Useful still but a bit sweaty to wear on a hot day

ChocolateDoll · 21/08/2018 02:07

You need the Diary Doll ones from Boots.

They are not an alternative to pads. She will still need to use a pad.

But they are bloody brilliant as a back up, and they will capture all leaks.

A lifesaver for such a young girl who is only just learning how to manage the flow and how often she needs to change.

ChocolateDoll · 21/08/2018 02:07

They are also super comfy.

You’d never know they weren’t normal knickers. It’s like magic!
