Where to buy size 16 clothes from UK?

looking for the best shops to buy size 16/18 everyday clothes for a 45 year old woman.

High street prices, definately wants to be fashionable and not middle aged looking.

We've been looking in most of the high street shops (oasis/warehouse/next) but don't seem to have a great range of this size and the stuff they do seem to be really unflattering, horrible material and gerneally yuck.

We've looked on pinterest and the inspartion on there is fantastic but mostly American and it's as though UK think you can't look great, trendy and carefree if your over 40 and over weight.

Joanie Clothing? Keep seeing Holly Willoughby in it.

Marks and Spencer seems better this season!

Quite a few retailers stock larger sizes online but not in stores. Monsoon, for example, go up to a 22 online.

I saw a nice dress in New Look in an 18 yesterday.

Otherwise, I'd try John Lewis.

I never have trouble buying 14/16 in any high street stores, I’m 47. Ranges don’t just stop at size 14 anywhere not even typically more youthful brands like H&M, New Look etc I often find they can be unavailable in store as it’s such a popular size. Get online to order. Really it’s not restrictive at all.

Cherrypie32 · 20/08/2018 13:38

Hush in Large or XL?

BluthsFrozenBananas · 20/08/2018 13:46

I’m a size 16, the only shop I’ve found which doesn’t always stock above a 14 is H and M. If you’re finding horrible clothes in cheap fabric thats just the high street in general these days, not specifically larger sizes.

EnormousDormouse · 20/08/2018 13:51

Uniqlo
Sainsburys (...if you look past their horrid coloured fashion stuff there will be a core of cotton/linen decent stuff)

Cherrypie32 · 20/08/2018 13:53

Phase Eight good for these sizes.

Lookatmenow · 20/08/2018 14:10

Thanks all, i think the main thing is like you've said, the shops go to the larger sizes but not necessarily in the shop, that means you have to go online and order.

Not a fan of online ordering, would much prefer to see in the flesh and feel the fabric and try on 5 different items before having to exchange any sort of payment!!

Debenhams is ok.

1sttimeDD · 20/08/2018 14:15

Simply Be clothing has a very flattering cut!

goose1964 · 20/08/2018 15:05

you're making a rookie mistake looking for size 16 DD is a size 14 and after a birthday shopping spree came home with anything from a 12 to an 18

Lookatmenow · 20/08/2018 15:30

That is true. Thus is why we would much prefer to go to shops rather than online

Firstly, it is not necessary to shop for a particular age. Women are free to choose clothes they like - the clothes don’t have age ranges on the labels.

Secondly in my world looking ‘middle aged’ means looking highly stylish, individual and frankly amazing. But I guess you want something different?

Thirdly, there is almost no High St any more. It is perfectly possible to be well dressed in the sizes you mention but you perhaps need to be more adventurous in your shopping methods.

The fact you are reluctant to shop online is not the fault of the online shops! That is where the choice and quality is. Try it.

TollgateDebs · 20/08/2018 16:30

I don't think age has anything to do with it, but lifestyle and body shape does and you should wear what makes you happy. If you only shop on the High Street, I agree with others, that you miss a great many good deals (and a much wider selection / offering), especially as on-line seems to have clearance / sales sections that their high street shops don't.

Sainsbury Tu - both on-line and in store, 25% sales are great
Uniqlo - love some of their t-shirts and jumpers and sizing generous
Phase Eight - on-line, some great bargain dresses and in a wider range of sizes than on the high street
Lands End - basics, knitwear
Winser - good dresses
Finery - interesting offering
Boden - again often great offers in clearance on line
Clarks - have a clearance shoe website, with some great bargains
M&Co - need to rummage, but a few good items each season

Odiepants · 20/08/2018 16:41

46 and size 16-18 currently. I don't find it difficult to buy clothes on the High Street but I used to be a 22-24 so maybe it's just much easier in comparison with being larger. Or maybe I'm settled into middle age Grin

I usually rely on Next, some M&S, Boden (clearance), Sainsburys, John Lewis etc. Most brands go to a 16 or 18 and lots are sized larged so I can often get into size 14 when I'm really not. I do agree it's frustrating when stores don't have larger sizes but mostly this tends to be sizes above an 18 nowadays.

Cherrypie32 · 20/08/2018 16:52

My husband would be ecstatic if I found it difficult to buy clothes 😂

Lookatmenow · 20/08/2018 17:47

It's just that I enjoy going out to shop. Looking around, seeing what's about, touching the material etc. I miss this if shopping on line and I can't abide wasting hours scrolling through pages and pages of stuff that I don't want or need.

The shopping experience is better imo

I have found Joanie Clothing to be true to size for plus size.

However, if you're looking for a wide variety in store I recommend Yours Clothing. It's specifically plus size and reasonably priced.

Gruach · 20/08/2018 18:13

It’s not much of an experience if you can’t source the products you want.

I understand about the enjoyment of browsing in a physical shop (if you can find one ...). Can you not think of that as a separate activity? Certainly it’s useful to try out shapes and sizes in a changing room - so you have a better idea of what suits you.

But. 95% of my clothes now come from shops that have no existence on the UK High Street. Some may have one obscure little place in London but most are in Europe and don’t have physical premises at all (except for warehousing).

If your internet shopping experience is unsatisfactory - you’re doing it wrong! You need to be more focused and look further afield. And ... a tip for you: it’s actually possible to buy really beautiful and well made ‘designer’ (I don’t know the current word for this) garments at High St prices (ish) if you know where to look and get into the rhythm of their sales calendar.

Ps - I’m a million years older than you and better dressed than I’ve ever been.

Pps - More expensive clothes are more generously cut - so you may find sizes14-16 work. And size 18 is hardly unusual in England ...
