Styling out menopausal sweats

Blastandbollocks · 19/08/2018 10:13

How do you do it? I'm overweight (starting to work on this) but perimenopausal/
menopausal. So sweats are horrific at times. This hot weather also not helping.

I've moved away from polyester (mostly!) and into cotton, but having issues with body seats.

Any help?

Layers, and less clothing than you used to wear for the season. It'll be autumn/winter soon, so that is something to look forward to.
Natural fabrics, definitely no polyester. I manage ok with viscose, linen, rayon, merino, and of course cotton.

Do you mind me asking how old are you blast?

IncrediblySturdyPyjamas · 19/08/2018 13:42

Pop a HRT patch on.

No more sweats.

Floisme · 19/08/2018 14:03

I didn't find I was permanently warmer - in fact I would get quite cold in between sweats - so always wore layers.

I found silk was good as it dries quickly, whereas cotton would take ages and I'd be left sitting around in damp clothes. I bought silk shirts from charity shops by the shedload - still do in fact.

Baggy linen clothing (lagenlook style). Natural fibres. A hand held fan. A good face primer!

About to be 41 @curlywurlyupsydaisy. GP isn't sure about it being the menopause as apparently there is insufficient evidence due to my periods still being "within normal range" ie they haven't stopped or missed any. I am though, based on familial evidence - DM continued as normal until they literally just stopped.

Are they erratic all of a sudden? Sorry...not s&b related!

Blastandbollocks · 20/08/2018 11:47

Erratic isn't a good descriptor exactly. I'm still getting regular periods, but instead of my usual clockwork 28 days, it's now anything between 24-30. Flow has changed too.

I'm sorry but you can't be having a menopause with regular periods.

Lynne1Cat · 20/08/2018 13:22

at 41, I'd have thought you would be too young for the menopause. Also, you have periods every month? That's not menopause symptoms. Has your GP checked your thyroid levels?

I'm going through a late menopause (I'm 59, had a terrible past 5 years, but no periods at all now since last October)

Twistella · 20/08/2018 13:23

The menopause topic is full of 30 or 40 year olds convinced they are going through menopause.

It does happen but is extremely uncommon

Twistella · 20/08/2018 13:27

DM continued as normal until they literally just stopped

Yes, this is normal. This hasn't happened to you though. You are still having periods. I second the advice about getting thyroid checked.

blessedmum2x · 20/08/2018 13:31

It is most likely perimenopause. It's very common in women in the 40s. Symptoms are similar to menopause. Major difference between the two is that in perimenopause, periods tend to be regular.

I am not able to advise on styling. My personal experience is that I have longer periods of feeling cold than sweaty. I sweat more at night when I am in bed, so I only wear undies to bed.

MaudesMum · 20/08/2018 15:13

Menopausal person here! Less layers and natural fabrics, definitely. I'd also recommend the occasional cotton scarf and/or cotton hanky, so you can mop your face down discretely if necessary. I've also noticed that with myself I tend to overheat more when I'm anxious and also find when I get hot these days I find it really hard to cool down - so I overheat very badly in hot rooms and remain hot for a long time afterwards . So I try and plan around those situations. Eg, making sure I've got extra time in hand if I'm walking to meetings, so I don't rush and arrive all hot. So, do see if there are particular situations that trigger your hotness! I have to say, I've lost some weight and it hasn't really helped - sorry!

rightknockered · 20/08/2018 19:16

I'm mid 40s and peri menopausal. I had to see three gps at my surgery to get on HRT. Finally was seen by a younger female gp who didn't hesitate. Go back and see a different gp, preferably someone younger. You can go on different types of HRT depending on whether you still have periods. Hot flushes are a definite sign and awful to have to just tolerate.
