Capsule wardrobe wannabe and advice on chopping my locks

Greetings dear posters and lurkers!

My eyes always dart to the any post title containing 'capsule wardrobe' and a part of me wishes I could get rid of my many items of clothes and be one of those people with a wardrobe of 12 items in beige, black and cerise. However, I LOVE pattern, I LOVE colour, I LOVE pretty things with flattering, flowing cuts, I LOVE vintage-look stuff (think Liberty print) and I LOVE a cheeky bit of metallic 80's sports luxe thrown in! 😀😂😁

But...I really want to sort my look and my wardrobe. I'm not against formulaic, but how do I do it with my tastes? I will never be the perfect jeans and fitted white t-shirt type (whilst I wholly admire those who look fabulous with this look).

Help? Advice? Thoughts? All very much appreciated. 😊

On another note...my hair has always been a bit of a feature - it's long, straight, blonde and all one length aside from a fringe, but I'm thinking of having a precision cut bob. I had a similar cut about 8 years ago and loved it (and often got asked where I'd had my hair done).

And for a bit of context - I'm 34 (young-looking, I, told!), size 8 and mama to a 10-month old. 💗

Thanks for reading and can't wait to hear your thoughts! ⭐️ xx

Capsule doesn’t mean 12 black and beige items. You can have a capsule of crazy prints if that’s what your heart desires.

I think if you fancy getting your hair cut, do it!! Hair grows and it can feel good to have a change!

Sometimes you don't need to have a capsule wardrobe, as such, but it can be therapeutic to have a sort out and streamline things so you can see what you have and feel more in control!

I don't have a capsule wardrobe but I have a few basics like jeans / denim jacket l leather jacket / blazer and then can build things with them - if you see what I mean.

Not sure if that helps 😂

Thank you, Cat and Sunshine 😀 x

So why do you want a capsule wardrobe?

I wanted one because I had a load of stuff that didn't go together, or didn't fit, or was getting worn and I struggled to know what to wear each day. I also wanted to stop impulse buying and think how things would go with what I had (i.e. Not stay in my wardrobe and never get worn)

So - why don't you get rid of anything worn, doesn't fit you for a starting point?

Then look at what you have left - see if you can fit some of it into a clothes sudoku (helps you see how your clothes fit together). You can have more than one, it's just a way of seeing how your clothes fit together.

Then see what's left over - do you have too much of something (black trousers? White tops?). Consider either getting rid of some or keeping them stored until the others run out - and don't buy more!

And if you want your hair cut, do it!

Thanks so much, What - my reasons are actually very similar to yours. You've given me some great starter questions, too, and love the 'capsule sudoku'! x

Star

I'm a bit like you and that I like a variety of styles- patterns, colour, cuts.Think elements of COS and florals and ruffles from Zara then everything between!!! I too am trying to organise myself. However, I do find that I have a go to of basic items eg blue, black or grey leggings and blue, white, black, Navy t shirts. Then I have my colourful, pattern print stuff over this e.g colourful pattern kimono over basic t or colourful pattern dress over basic leggings. I have realised for me that I can't easily style coloured leggings like teal and purple with accessories and shoes so that's why I stick to blue, black and grey jeggings and recently white in the summer.

The clothes suduko sounds great

Haircut- how about a long bob. So it is not so drastic and then you can chop shorter next time round?

I love Denise Van Outens bob, OP, go for the chop ! 😄

I’m like you in that I love crazy prints and colour but then realised nothing worked together. I then worked on consciously buying base items in neutral colours that would work with the crazy prints etc. So, now I have a capsule wardrobe of neutrals to work with my large wardrobe of accents :)
