What do you do about grey roots between hairdresser visits?

I have mid brown hair with quite a bit of grey. I deal with it by having blonde highlights which make the grey less obvious and a semi-permanent dye on top.

This usually lasts a couple of months before the colour needs touching up. Well I won't be able to get to see my hairdresser for 3 weeks now, and am seeing about an inch of darker hair with grey roots.

What do others do about covering this up?

I bought some powder in the US which you are supposed to brush on but it's a bit crap. Are there any other easy products I can use? Don't need to use it every day, just for occasions when I have important work meetings.

Thanks.

L'Oreal root concealer spray - fab stuff

Hangingaroundtheportal · 15/08/2018 13:52

I use those powders, the ones that are like an eyeshadow. Have used a John Frieda one which was good, a Batiste one which was crap, and a Makeup Revolution one which was just as good as the JF one but half the price.

I can't get on with the sprays. They go everywhere, deposit too much colour and end up all sticky and horrible feeling on my head. The powders you cant even feel.

I also use L'Oreal root concealer spray which does the trick.

Dye them myself with a root touch up kit

WOW root touch up powder. More expensive but worth it. I have a grey patch on my hairline and have dark brown hair. I also get caramel highlights to disguise the grey.

When my hair is freshly coloured I have a side parting, when roots are visible it's pinned back /tied up!!
Find a nice restyle for the grey days!!

I know someone who is always raving about Clairol Nice and Easy root touch up (which is an in between colourings root dye) but she applies it with a little brush and not the one in the package.

I think if you get a good colour match for you, as she has, it's a good product.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've tried home dying kits & I'm just not very good at it.

I'll check out the WOW powder & L'oreal spray.

Sadly my short bob isn't really suitable for resting on grey days!

I also use WOW. I find it much more natural looking and better coverage than the spray or cheaper powders.

Stop pretending and grow it out Smile

I have a collection of the root sprays. Can't get on with the powder. Also can't be bothered to go to the hairdresser all the time! quite apart from the cost. Roots start showing so quickly.

Have tried going grey but it made me feel much older.

Badtasteflump · 15/08/2018 19:22

The sprays and powders are a bit messy and can start dripping down your face on a hot day or if it rains.

I've found the best thing is to just use brown waterproof mascara.

I use L'Oréal root touch up, does the job. I tried the spray but it was so sticky and gave my hair a matt appearance, didn't look or feel natural at all.
