Underwear under a dress

It's my DDs 21st soon and for the first time in a long time I've bought a dress to wear. Only trouble is I'm a size 22 and feel like a heffalump in pretty much everything ... does anyone have any suggestions of effective underwear to pull me in a bit and not look so 'rolly'? Thank you!

My suggestion would be to get a dress that you feel you look good in without the devil's undergarments. I cannot bear to wear the stuff. Sizing up often works depending on the style.

I quite like some of shaping underwear, but it makes things feel supported rather than constricted and definitely provides smoother lines in clothes. Have a look at M&S. You'll need to try on a few different styles under your dress, as some of them just move the rolls around

Thanks for your replies. DH has said he doesn't like the dress now as it makes me look short and frumpy so it's back to the drawing board for me. I wasn't too sure anyway so that's the nail in the coffin Sad

What kind of dress are you after?

Deadheadstickeronacadillac · 15/08/2018 20:47

If you live in Kent or Essex I have a ton of dresses etc in size 22 and around that size that I have worn for work and dressy occasions. Give me a shout if you want to borrow or at least see some photos.
I know this offer seems weird but I had a gastric sleeve two years ago and have gone down to a size 18, but I know what it is like to feel like nothing ever looks good, so I just want to help Blush.
In terms of underwear a properly fitted bra is always amazing, it lifts the boobs up which always makes the tummy look smaller! This was always my trick
ASOS and M&S tend to have decent plus size shape wear but in most cases a simple slip will work to smooth lumps and bumps.

Ah thanks so much .. I've not really worn dresses for years so not sure what suits me! I'm around 5'4 size 22 and do have a waist of sorts!

Thanks so much for the offer of the dresses I'd love to see some photos to get some inspiration if that's ok

I'm a 22 as well and bought this to go under a dress just smooth things out. Very comfy and does the job well.

I always find a good bra and no pants give the best shape I swear my knickers give me bulges no matter what style they are

sonjadog · 16/08/2018 06:34

My experiences of shaper underwear is that it just makes the fat pop up somewhere else, like a sausage trying to escape its skin. What I find looks best is a new and good quality bra that lifts and then gives me a clearer waistline underneath, and great big pants. Under some dresses a slip makes it sit more smoothly. I find empire waists look best on me. They highlight my thinnest point and cover my tummy.

kgal · 16/08/2018 07:44

Yes that was my worry where does the fat go!! Thanks for all the suggestions

Men can sometimes be too blunt can't they! What kind of colours do you like? What kind of party is it going to be?

If you don't feel comfortable in a dress then you could always go for some brightly coloured culottes or a wrap skirt and a flattering top?

Dorothy Perkins has some nice pieces in their curvy range! & Simply be has some lovely dresses if you do want to go that way?

Sorry if these aren't helpful x

you want something heavy enough to skim and not cling, but not boingy enough to squish.
Also as a pp said, size up, so it's not crimping you

Primark can be good for slips...I have had a couple of good slips from there.
