Atm its just shoulder length and is quite afro ish!

I would love a style which looks simple yet well groomed but my hair hair always looks messy and unkempt!

Any ideas?

Have you tried straighteners?? i have frizzy hair not madly but do. It works well for me unless it rains then it frizzes up again.

huffpuff · 03/06/2007 20:21

i look like a man in drag with straight hair! Definitely not a good look for me!

do you blow dry? i find that its best to embrace one's curls put some serum on wet hair. dry naturally.

or..maybe have a longish feathered fringe with a side parting, then straighten the fringe ONLY with straighteners. my man at toni and guy does this for me. trendy and easy to do at home.

hth

ruddynorah · 03/06/2007 20:26

how are you drying it? what shape is it now? any layers?

Rubyslippers · 03/06/2007 20:26

i have fine, curly hair and am forever wearing it "up" - I always find long(ish) layers give me a few more options though as the length pulls the curls less tight so it looks less puffy

Rubyslippers · 03/06/2007 20:27

noooooooooooooo to chanelle's hair
you must embrace the curl! i have found that John Frieda products are good for reducing frizz and making curls look better

huffpuff · 03/06/2007 20:29

i use all the frizz ease stuff.

It does work but i just find it looks messy.

I do have some layers but im looking kinda like Whitney atm and that aint a good look for a white girl!

I use Redken Fresh Curls on wet hair, comb it while wet and then scrunch dry it with a hair dryer if I want it to look decent or let it dry naturally if I'm not as bothered (95% of the time). Then it actually looks curly rather than a mix of wavy, curly and frizzy. Sometimes I put a bit of Toni & Guy curk cream (sorry I can't remember the name) just in the top.

BellaBear · 03/06/2007 20:30

*curl not curk!

Rubyslippers · 03/06/2007 20:30

keep the layers long to avoid the puffball look
if you have thick hair, try to get in thinned out a bit ...

noonar · 03/06/2007 20:32

go to a good salon. get some advice and a decent cut. essential with problem hair, like ours!

mumemma · 03/06/2007 20:34

Bumble and Bumble leave-in conditioner mixed with B&B serum is brilliant for keeping it frizz-free and in good condition. I'm now leaving my hair curly after years of ironed hair and I prefer it like this but it's hard to get it into a specific style and look smart. How about buying some funky hair clips from somewhere like Butler & Wilson or Johnny Loves Rosie and clipping the front or sides? Or, for style ideas, try this - www.ukhairdressers.com/style/style.asp

My hair is fine-ish, dark, shoulder-length and curly. I have it cut (slightly layered) every few months and put Fudge Hair Putty or John frieda Brilliant Brunette finisher and spray on it daily, which keeps it pretty much in line, although it's never going to look really neat. I wash it every day, which might not be strichtly necessary, but I do find it suffers if I miss out conditioner. It is a PITA sometimes but I wouldn't dream of straightening it.

berolina · 03/06/2007 21:51

Much as I like JF, I wasn't all that impressed with Frizz Ease, have to say.

nachomama · 03/06/2007 21:57

I downloaded pictures tonight taken at a BBQ today. at the state of my hair which I thought was quite passable when I had stepped out the door this morning. This picture was of the back of my head and was a cross between Califau's delovely Beyonce link and the not-at-all-lovely Van Halen pin-ups circa 1987. I am desperate for a decent cut/ style! So I, too, welcome your suggestions. I have been thinking recently about getting a fringe. What do you all think- curly hair and fringe?

berolina · 03/06/2007 22:00

My very hip Berlin hairdresser did me a fringe with a layered bob-type cut once as that was currently 'in', but it was an unmitigated disaster - no amount of products would enable me to get it lying sleek and flat. It fluffed up most hideously. So I ended up combing it to the side and clipping it up. I would say don't go there.

DivineKiss · 04/06/2007 14:28

You could try a sea salt spray.

Garnier do them as do bumble & bumble. Garnier also do gels and waxes which are good for defining.

When i have my hair curly i sometimes pin the front up with clips (akin to a quiff but not with the height) i use hair bands, do messy buns, maybe invest in a crocodile clip or there are hairbands with a sort of comb attachment all the way round.
