I mean does anyone know how the coloured lines are applied? Nail tape? String? Dental floss?

Either nail tape or a very very fine brush and a very steady hand

Doyoumind · 08/08/2018 23:04

Nail tape.

Nail tape or super fine brush and a steady hand. My friend does her nails like this and she is truly an artist!

thefirstmrsdewinter · 09/08/2018 11:14

I can barely be bothered to apply varnish never mind faff about adding extra stuff but I love the way this looks and I was hoping there was a way to do it without the steady hand.

Actually if the nails are matte and the colour is shiny I think it must be varnish - ?

You can get matt nail polish and shiny tape though, so could still be either.

Tape tends to have a very slightly more raised effect than polish.

You can get the tape on ebay/amazon.
It's not very expensive. Give me a minute I'll find a link

BillywigSting · 09/08/2018 17:53

eBay link

thefirstmrsdewinter · 09/08/2018 18:19

BillywigSting yes but you put a topcoat over tape. If there's no topcoat the tape curls off. What that looks like to me is a matte nail and a shiny stripe. If the topcoat was matte the tape would be matte and if the topcoat was shiny the nail would be shiny.

You could do a matte nail and a shiny stripe with nail varnish though.

I've been looking at tape and what I've seen is all holographic/metallic and none of those fresh, bright colours. You can make your own tape, but again you'd have the matte/shiny issue.

It's possible that I'm overthinking it. Smile

Nail decals allow this sort of thing. You stick them on and use them as a stencil to get the shape you want.

You could easily do a matte base coat and a shiny stripe.

Vitalogy · 09/08/2018 18:25

Felt tip.

thefirstmrsdewinter · 09/08/2018 18:35

QuestionableMouse I think cellotape would work pretty well as a template, but it would take absolute ages to line it all up.

Vitalogy are there felt tips for nails in particular or do you mean just normal felt tips?

QuestionableMouse · 10/08/2018 13:32

The nail decals are already shaped so all you have to do is stick them on. I'll see if I can find a video.

Great, thanks!

What odd photos. I’ve with a 1970s Brentford Nylons bedspread and in-depth a...I have no idea what that contraption is!!

Vitalogy · 10/08/2018 17:50

Yes, sorry I was being flippant. I'll stay away from the manicure threads next time. Smile

Paie · 10/08/2018 17:57

For lines like that you could easily use normal tape or masking tape.
Just cover the area you don't want painted with the tape, paint your stripe and rip the tape off carefully but quickly pulling it upwards :)

Nail tape is great for creating stripes on already painted nails. I never leave the nail tape on as I find it peels. I use it to create patterns and stripes though :)

Lol, it's a lamp. Photos from here: blog.urbanoutfitters.com/blog/uo_your_room_5_dorm_essentials_with_jenna_yankun
