Apple shape advice anyone?

Pressuredrip · 08/08/2018 19:36

I'm Apple shaped, and really really struggling to find tops that will suit me. I particularly want a few causal tops for an imminent holiday but can't find anything at all. Any other apples out there that have found anything recently?

I am also really quite fussy, I don't like floral patterns (or most patterns 🙈) I prefer block dark colours but will be a bit more adventurous with colour for a holiday. No pink, I don't suit pastel colours. I love playsuits but everyone I've tried seem to accentuate my flabby tummy. I look ok in short dungarees though.

I've read that wrap tops are good for Apple shape but I've not been able to find any that aren't really frumpy. Any other tips from anyone? It's so hard to find even basic tshirts that don't cling to the tummy.

I agree, really hard to find apple friendly tops! What are you wearing them with? If neat shorts then a looser scoop neck / v neck vest would work or if an a line skirt then a more fitted vest looks best imo
Dorothy Perkins have plenty of vests in plain colours and I also like white stuff ( generous sizing ).
This oasis vest is good for going out, synthetic so maybe not holiday friendly http://www.oasis-stores.com/gb/clothing/tops/high-back-vest/0611661906.html
I wear mine out not tucked in!
Wrap wise I've just ordered this but not tried on yet. Hopefully not frumpy

honestly, tuck stuff in and you will give yourself more shape.

stretch lycra tops are not an apple's friend unless you are a very low fat apple like Meghan Markle.

i think that woven fabrics (rather than jersey or fluid viscose) are better as these dont tend to cling onto fat on belly and flanks.

looser cotton sleeveless shirts, woven bardot tops in blue and white pinstripe?

looser skimming light weight jersey rather than tight lycra jersey?

sorry Grin no links to items to give you!

Linen jersey doesn’t cling. I have linen tops from H&M, Oysho &Wrap that drape over my Apple shaped body. The worse t shirts I’ve tried on are M&S Pima cotton that clung rather unfetchingly to every lump & bump.

Thanks tatapie, I like those but probably out of my price range. I'll look for similar elsewhere.

Flitteryleaves honestly I look awful tucked in, I'm skinny everywhere except my tummy which is round and flabby. But when I'm slimmer I think it could work. I'm about a stone and a half away from losing my tummy. I'll try shirts thank you.

Teta oh I've seen some linen blend tops on H&M I was wondering about them, I find jersey ones are often clingy ands see through so it might be what I'm after.

I am an apple, OP. I find:

  • boxy tops that skim tummy but with tighter trousers
  • loose bubble hem tops but with elastic
  • fit and flare for more formal
  • thicker more structured fabrics

I am an apple and this summer these have been my saviour . Not that colour but black , red and a patterned one. With Hush ruched skirt or denim shorts on warm days. With H and M slim cropped trousers or skinny jeans. Kimono jackets have been great in cooler days/slash evenings. Hope pic attaches

Apple shape advice anyone?

i thought that too, pressuredrip but i tuck in and pull it out so my shirts hide my bulges at the sides of my hips/flanks. i've bought a load of h and m lightweight cotton stripey shirts recently.

puppymouse has given good tips.

teta · 10/08/2018 17:38

Fluttery Wrap do good linen vests if you can find any left in the sale. There’s some in Tk maxx online at the moment, though I managed to pick up 2 in-store.
Oysho have cream & saffron linen t shirts with adjustable shoulder ties that are in the sale and I find them a really good shape on.
H&M linen mix t shirts are good but the linen ones can be a bit sheer and need to be worn with a nude bra.
I don’t really get on with bubble hem tops for some reason though I know others swear by them.
Another brilliant top is the M&S silk vest. I bought 2 blue in the sale and the shape fits at the bust and skims over the tummy. They’re in black, champagne and a aquamarine at the moment.I’m hoping there will be more colours for winter.

Pressuredrip not Fluttery.

I've recently been classified as Apple by a personal stylist and I was shocked - always thought I was hourglass Blush
She told me I need to wear tops that have some kind of detail at the shoulders to balance my body out. Made complete sense and really does work.
She also advised tucking in - not necessarily all of the top , as I prefer a relaxed/slouchy look - so I just literally tuck in the very front of any loose fitting tops I wear. It just gives a hint of my waist and looks so much better.

puppymouse · 10/08/2018 19:33

@Lidlfix great top! I have three virtually identical from Matalan and they're so flattering.

flutteryleaves · 10/08/2018 21:04

babyintha, yes! i forgot the shoulder detail - i definitely know that but forgot to mention it.

shoulder detail tops are good as they create width at the top so i look less block-y and like a solid mass of flab from rib cage to hip flab.

i have shift dresses with structured ruffles on shoulders and several bardot tops in a woven cotton. i've also got a beautiful broderie anglais top with crisp frills when i'm arsed to iron it.

red is summery.

dh says it is the most flattering dress i have had in a long time.

puppymouse · 10/08/2018 21:56

@flutteryleaves I love that dress! None of the colours are ones I wear but if they had navy I'd buy it I think

Centreparcsooheer · 10/08/2018 22:45

I'm an apple and cannot tuck in either as I look like a barrel!

Pressuredrip · 13/08/2018 10:55

Thanks for all the advice some great tips. The George tops look great, more in my price range and I have one I can order in to just up the road. I've found a tanking top like that on Amazon, and several loose at the tummy tops on EBay, including a grey satin effect one with cold shoulder that I think might work well.

I see what you mean now about tucking in, so tucking in to create a baggy bit rather than just to create the image of a waist. I actually found some Gypsy tops in Matalan last year that were so flattering on me, they were elasticated on the arms and bottom of the top, but loose on the tummy. I guess tucking in would create that same effect.

This is the same top as I had last year but I had khaki and red. I'm not keen on this or the other patterned ones this year. But it might be helpful for others.

i've got a couple og those George tops, they've got great smart/casual versatility.

Lallybroch · 15/08/2018 19:47

I'm apple shaped and swear by those camisoles from Asda. You can dress them down with a cardigan or dress them up with a jacket.
