Help me grow my hair

StrawberriesAndCream123 · 08/08/2018 18:22

Hi,

I have been trying to grow my hair long for about 4 years. It was just above shoulder length and has grown just below shoulder length, so about 4/6 inches in 4 years.

I don't wash to often and limit straightening to once a week. I only have it cut every other visit to the salon (12 weeks).

Any tips to speed things up?

I would investigate supplements that aid in hair strength and growth. Vitamin E is always a good start but I'm sure there are other combinations that would aid growth as well. I'm the opposite of you, in that my hair grows like weeds. Speak to your stylist - they may have a better idea of what would help. Good luck! :)

Ummmmgogo · 08/08/2018 18:45

stop cutting it. if you hadn't cut it in 4 years it would be past your bum by now!

Aridane · 08/08/2018 18:46

Some of us just have slow growing hair..,

ednakenneth · 08/08/2018 18:54

Have you looked on YouTube for some ideas? There's loads of tips from 'real' people. Stop using sulphate and paraben contained shampoos and conditioners. They aren't expensive so don't worry. Deep conditioning your hair with natural products such as banana, avocado and aloe Vera. It's great especially after using straighteners which in the long run ain't good for your hair. But do have a look at YouTube.( curly penny. Bianca Renee)

How much are you having cut off every 12 weeks? An inch every 12 weeks for 4 years would be nearly 18". If your hair grows 0.5" a month that would be 24" over 4 years, only leaving you with 6" growth.

My mum is convinced that cold pressed caster oil massaged into your scalp 3x per week, stimulates hair follicles and therefore growth. Might be bollocks but cheap enough to try.

pnutter · 08/08/2018 20:58

Castor oil

Agree that it really is as simple as stop cutting it. I fell for the myth of cutting it to keep it healthy and make it grow but then didn’t go to the hairdresser for a year and it grew at least 6”.

haverhill · 08/08/2018 21:05

Yep, stop cutting it. Also treat it very very gently, like silk ( best hair care advice I ever got).
However, everyone’s hair has a different age at which the hair will naturally fall out. You may have the type of hair that falls early compared to the average which unfortunately will limit the length it’ll get to.

I think that vit B is meant to be good for hair too

Chicinwellies · 08/08/2018 22:13

Haha banana? Honestly. Deep conditioning your hair in banana is not going to help it grow. A diet with plenty of vitamin e and b 9-12 will help if there is deficiency there.

AmandaAndMichael · 08/08/2018 22:16

Have your hair trimmed twice a year to keep it tidy. Regular cutting is simply going to maintain the length you already have.

princesstiasmum · 08/08/2018 23:58

Biotin is good for hair and nails, i have noticed a difference especially nails

CountFosco · 09/08/2018 00:04

This is bullshit. We all have a maximum length we can grow our hair to depending how long the hair follicles live. Four haircuts a year will not make much difference if the hairdresser is just tidying up a bit each time.

PickAChew · 09/08/2018 00:14

My hair doesn't even grow to bra strap length and my fringe won't grow as far as the end of my nose.

IsTheRainEverComingBack · 09/08/2018 00:16

I’m growing my hair after years of dying and battling. I’m getting it trimmed only when I have to, just enough to keep the ends nice, which is roughly every 6/7 months. Also lots of good fats, minimal heat, no dye. I’ve gone from just above the shoulders to almost bra strap length in about 18 months and it looks great, despite not being very thick.

IsTheRainEverComingBack · 09/08/2018 00:17

Basically you’re cutting it too much

MsBagelLady · 09/08/2018 08:56

I'm growing mine, I've kept my hair short for many years but it's now long enough to be put up into a teeny weeny pony tail to keep my hair off my neck as it makes me too hot at the moment. I wouldn't consider cutting it as I want it to grow.

CanYouHearThePeopleSing · 09/08/2018 09:05

I've been growing out a pixie cut since last summer. It was above my ears. It's now midway between jaw and shoulder, and I've had it tidied up/ trimmed every 7-8 weeks. But growth has definitely slowed over the past 3 months (when I've had less cut off than before), so maybe there is a limit to how much your hair will grow.

specialsubject · 09/08/2018 09:24

nothing speeds up your natural hair growth rate, claims on packs are all lies.

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 09/08/2018 09:53

But surely you can maximise your own hair's natural ability by getting all the right vitamins and minerals, keeping your scalp in good condition, getting thyroid and ferritin levels checked?

Also if your hair gets too long, it can pull on the scalp and make hair thin and weak. Better to have shorter hair but in better condition.

specialsubject · 09/08/2018 12:47

yeah. so eat properly, obviously. scalps don t need maintenance beyond washing.

lotions and potions target the foolish and desperate. there is one that works, strong drug.

BonnieF · 09/08/2018 12:50

Yep, just stop cutting it. Mine seemed to grow much more quickly when I stopped getting it cut!

Crazy3 · 09/08/2018 13:00

I also have slow growing hair. That is super curly. I have learned a lot over the last few years after switching to the curly girl method.
It may be helpful for you to follow. If you have lotus hair silicones in many hair products can go deeper into your hair shaft, they become brittle and break, add into the mix the use of straighteners and damage can be pretty bad. So you go silivone and sulphate free. Brands like Shae moist, noughty hair care are sulphate free and do products for straight hair too. Do one last wash with a sulphate shampoo- that’s the only way to strip the silicone out as best you can. Then switch, wash pnce maybe twice a week with a super gentle shampoo, you can also do a co wash mid week with a hair cleanser or conditioner as opposed to a shampoo. This will help your hair. Do a deep condition mask once a week wrap your hair in a shower cap and warm towel for half an hour. And stop using the straighteners. If you have to blow dry- most people do then use a hair dryer on low heat setting. Maybe embrace your waves and use some curl products like wave hello from noughty or boucleme curl gel. I have been doing this for 4 years, my hair has gone from jaw Langtry slow growing brittle hair to shoulder length strong shiny hair. Good luck

Verbena87 · 09/08/2018 13:04

No cutting, less washing and only with hippy shampoo, no heat on it, and mine was amazing when I was taking folic acid though I don’t know if there’s any evidence for it.

Give it a year/18 months and then go and get it trimmed. I once left mine 3 years; they still only needed to take about an inch off for split ends.
