How to remove mascara without losing lashes

Following on from the mascara holy grail thread, I always find that the mascara that give me good results are a struggle to take off without losing half my lashes in the process. Currently using benefit bad gal bang and it doesn’t come off easily at all.

I’ve tried micellar water, micellar gel, cream cleansers, the micro fibre mitt thing, foaming cleansers, nothing works well. What are your best tips?

I need an oil based cleanser for my waterproof mascara.

I use a specific eye make up remover called bioactive something by Espa with cotton pads and I wipe rather than rub at my eyelashes

I tried the no7 oil based cleanser but I ended up with oil in my eyes. It’s probably my technique that’s failing me Blush

Are you rubbing too much? Just hold the wet pad to your closed eyes for a couple of seconds and then wipe downwards.

Clinique Take the Day Off Balm. Ask for a sample in Boots or John Lewis or wherever they sell it near you. It's really good and requires no rubbing. Even waterproof. It just melts it.

Vaseline! Honestly, it’s the only thing that shifts two coats of waterproof mascara daily without irritation and I’ve got really sensitive eyes.

I had to stop wearing make up for a few weeks due to an allergy. My eyelashes looked thick and lovely.

Once I started wearing it again I lost one or two with each make-up removal.

How many are meant to come up per day naturally? Does anyone know?

Baby oil is cheap and as others have said, oil based cleansers are best for mascara. Also takes off kids temporary tattoos just in case you ever need to know. Grin

your normal mousuriser on a bit of loo paper cotton

Oil based makeup removers - the oils break down the product so you don’t need to rub or tug at your eyes, the product should just wipe away. You could even try vaseline as suggested

I personally use Kiehl’s midnight recovery cleansing oil. Lancôme bi facil is very good too.

Also don’t bother with regular cleansers or micellar water for removing eye makeup - it isn’t very efficient as it isn’t designed to remove waterproof makeup, so you will irritate your eyes. You need a dedicated eye makeup remover or an oil based makeup remover.

I wear eye makeup (shadow, mascara sometimes liner) daily and I virtually never lose a lash when removing the product.

Chamomile body butter from the body shop! Without a doubt.

Big bottle of castor oil from health shop, i use it for taking off all my makeup but it's great for removing eye makeup

Cumberlover76 · 08/08/2018 19:40

Coconut oil that you can buy in a jar from supermarket and a flannel and hot water. I spread the coconut oil on my eyes and face, wipe with hot wet flannel then wash my face with water and face wash or whatever you use to wash you face. It's pretty cheap and effective.

HeadOnKeyboard · 08/08/2018 19:48

Apply eye makeup remover on a cotton pad and place it over your eye for a few seconds, then fold it in half and place under your eye, with your lashes on top of it. Hold the cotton pad in place then gently rub the mascara off with a cotton bud.

Depending on they type of eye makeup remover you use you may need to put a bit of makeup remover on the cotton bud as well.

MightyMunki · 08/08/2018 21:42

I might try the coconut oil and flannel followed by a cleanser. Thank you so much for all your tips. I think my skin prefers a hot Muslin cloth cleanse method to oil but that said I’ve not tried coconut oil yet. I have trouble getting product off the root of the lash without getting it into my eye at the same time (if that makes sense).

Worst mascara I’ve ever tried removing was a max factor one, excess volume extreme, looked good on but wouldn’t come off for love nor money, ended up in the bin.

I use Systane Lid Wipes or Clinique eyemake-up remover if I run out of the eyelid wipes.

crumbsinthecutlerydrawer · 08/08/2018 23:01

I use coconut oil and a hot cloth. It’s fab. I was having problems with sensitive skin around my eyes for about a year and this has pretty much fixed it. Also agree about max factor mascaras, I had one years ago and although it looked amazing on it was dreadful to take off. Never bought another one.

MightyMunki · 09/08/2018 21:14

So just to update, the coconut oil worked really well with a hot cloth, still lost 4 lashes that I could see but I think that’s more the mascara than the cleansing method. Very gentle, melted it all away and did not sting or irritate my eyes at all. Will just have to switch mascara Confused
