Do any serums/creams etc for lines really work?

I don't wear makeup but at 50 I'm suddenly quite wrinkly.. eyes and lips mostly. A fairly thin face so it shows up.
I'm about as low maintenance as it gets.. wash with face wash or soap, a blob of moisturiser and I'm done. But My DD1 is getting married next month and I'm just wondering if there is anything that would make me look a bit less haggard !!!

I'm a sucker for anything cosmetic, the only treatment that really gets rid of wrinkles is Botox and I doubt that's up your street if you're not already into anything beautifying.

I love Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair and Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Daily Youth capsules [not together]. Also, buy a nice hydrating serum; I like Vichy Aqualia Thermal to massage in before your moisturiser.

I use Lancôme Genifique serum and it had done wonders for my skin. It’s expensive and takes a few months to show results though. The only thing that would work that quickly is Botox.

Worieddd · 07/08/2018 10:40

You just need retinol and spf in the day

Acopyofacopy · 07/08/2018 10:43

I think a high concentration of retinol is the only thing that has actually been proven to work, other than more invasive methods.

Good make up should help a bit, too.

I'm 41 ok I'm lucky only to have a couple of very fine lines but I find that Clinique smart repair serum has really helped my skin especially where it used to be flaky.

I wear a small pea size amount of serum mainly on my nose, forehead & chin, then apply Clinique Superdefense face cream spf20 for oily skin.

At night I use the serum then put on boots no7 protect & perfect eye cream, & Clinique smart repair night cream.

I use face wipes to cleanse my face in the morning if I'm short on time but if not then I like to use Simple purifying cleansing lotion & Simple toner to cleanse & tone twice a day.
I wash my face with Clinique 7 day scrub twice a week.

Agree with woriedd. The only two topical ingredients scientifically proven to have an effect on the visible signs of skin ageing are retinol (a vitamin A derivative) and broad spectrum SPF (UVA & UVB protectant).

You can buy all kinds of retinol products but so e are quite irritating. I’ve been experimenting with skincare for years and so my skin is fairly tolerant but even I have had issues with a lot of the high street stuff.

Eyes and lips are the first to ‘go’ because the skin is very thin and often doesn’t get sun protection.

I am currently using the Medik8 Crystal Retinal 6 serum, which is a sort of retinol but one that has been tinkered with to be incredibly effective but also incredibly gentle on skin (to do with the the number of conversions retinols have to do on the skin beforehand they become useable for the cells - more conversions = more irritation). It is expensive though, £59 for 30ml. It also has a stated amount of active ingredient.

You can get other retinol products for a lot less money but you might not like the texture (Ordinary, I’m Looking at you) or they might be irritating (La Roche Posay Redermic R, you). Also, be aware that lots of products say that they have retinol (or any ‘special’ ingredient) but don’t state how much, so chances are, you are putting minuscule amounts of active ingredient on your face and consequently are unlikely to see any difference.

You can also get retinol products on prescription (tretinoin is the biggie) but they are harsh on skin, peeling and whatnot. Usually only available through private prescription. I know some people buy from dodgy overseas websites but I wouldn’t advocate buying prescription drugs from unknown, unregulated sources.

You do need to use some form of good quality SPF that gives UVA & UVB protection every day, 365 a year. UV light is the biggest skin ager.

For noticeable results fast, I suggest Nip+Fab glycolic exfoliation pads to renew skin cells (twice a week evening is enough). Then nip+Fab serum with hyaluronic acid to plump up skin and hydrate. Use daily. Both available from Superdrug and usually on offer.
I also like rosehip oil from Trilogy for hydration. Or marula oil from The Ordinary. Can be used twice a day, as not greasy.

Do any serums/creams etc for lines really work?

never seen a before and after that shows a difference - because it i all lies.

suncream slows ageing but wont reverse it. windtunnel surgery or live with it. ageing better than the alternative.

I’ve just taken delivery of the ordinary’s Argireline (?) solution for eyes and forehead. If it does nothing, it was a £5 so, not lost much 😊

GeeLondon · 08/08/2018 18:01

You can safely buy tret otc in Portugal, Greece and Spain if you are visiting.

PM me for brand names.

Don't bother with Clinique / Nip fab or Lancome etc. Will do nothing for you realistically. No clinical trials behind it unlike retinoids.

lindyloo57 · 08/08/2018 19:20

just get the real thing tretinoin, in spain, as london says, its the only thing that really works, take some time its not instant, but better than all you can get in boot, superdrug,

withouttea · 08/08/2018 21:00

Retinol really works. I get it from Beauty Pie, which is a subscription thing which costs £10 a month, but the cost of the Super Retinol serum is then £10.32.

It's ace, I get lots of compliments on my skin!

bluerunningshoes · 08/08/2018 21:12

CoconutAmericano · 08/08/2018 22:34

tretinoin and spf. Honestly, thats it

moredoll · 09/08/2018 23:35

If you really want results for next month Botox from a reputable practitioner will do it. Expensive, but if you can afford it it's probably worth it.
