Hair colour (Toni & Guy) skin test

Hi all,

I’ve had highlights at Toni & Guy for years and can’t remember the last time I had a patch test but have never had any problems.

Booked an appointment at a different Toni & Guy yesterday, and they gave me a skin/patch test. The hairdresser put some colour on a plaster, stick it behind my ear and told me to try not to touch it for 48 hours.

All fine until the last few hours when it’s started to itch a bit, but then we’re in a heatwave, I’m sweating and have had a plaster in place more than 24 hours - I’m not that surprised it’s uncomfortable.

On google I’ve read mixed things on whether you’re supposed to cover it at all let alone leave the plaster on for 48 hours. Maybe I misunderstood the hairdresser, I don’t know. So I’ve now removed the plaster, my boyfriend said it looks a bit red but not too bad. Going to bed now so will see what it’s like tomorrow...

If anyone’s got any advice or comments it would be appreciated. It’s scary enough going to a new salon (it’s only because my usual hairdresser wasn’t available), but now I’m also worried I might be allergic (despite having T&G colour for years) or that this hairdresser doesn’t know what she’s doing applying it on a plaster and telling me to leave it on...

I last had one done in April so I can’t remember it exactly, but I think they just swabbed a bit behind my ear and left it like that. A plaster isn’t necessarily bad as it might just be there to stop it moving around/staining your hair etc. I would definitely mention the redness/uncomfortableness though. If you have a bad feeling about this salon/stylist in general just go somewhere else

You might be allergic to the plaster? Sometimes I get a mild rash from the glue in fabric plasters.

The salon chain I work at, we’re not allowed to patch test with plasters as if somebody reacts, you’re unsure if it’s the plaster or the colour. I used plasters about 10 years ago but they were to be removed after 30 mins as the colour had started to absorb and the excess could be wiped away. All salons I’ve worked at require the test to then be monitored for 48hrs after.
