Does anyone else have to alter summer clothes?

I’ve just spent the evening altering clothes. I turned a maxi into a midi and used the offcut to make think straps to replace the spaghetti straps. I’ve shorten the straps on another dress and turned up some shorts.
I hate sewing but can never find summer clothes that fit properly or suit me. I don’t have this problem at any other time of the year.
Does anyone else have the same problem?

I'm 5'7" which I feel is a similar height to everyone else but shops seem to think is tall so summer dresses are usually a bit short. Not really anything I can do as the hems on shop bought clothes don't leave anything to let down. Just have to be careful when choosing what to wear for work. Luckily, as a teacher, I'm off for quite a bit of the hottest part of the year (or there are no students around so we dress casually).

Yes, often shorten straps or add tucks and darts.
I think I’m a bit more discerning with autumn/winter clothes because they cost more and are thicker fabric so more difficult to alter.
Summer clothes are cheap and thin (‘holiday’ clothes, anyway) but need to fit well because there’s so little of them Grin

How strange Locked - I’m 5’10” and finding non-tall clothes pretty good this year Confused Maybe because everyone else is wearing heels, or because shortish trousers are fashionable?

I always need to shorten spaghetti straps, and maxi dresses (unless already from the petite section), but I am 5"2. I also find I need to take the waist in more often with summer clothes for some reason.

How do you take a waist in @Fabricwitch? That would be useful.

Yes, sometimes it feels like I alter almost everything I buy. I'm tall and long-waisted and summer dresses often have the waist too high. I lengthen or replace straps, insert a section in the shoulder, sometimes let down the hem if possible. And I'm aways re-cutting necklines as so many things have hideous high necks at the front. And if it doesn't have pockets, I add those too! I often get dresses cheap from ebay so it's not a disaster if my efforts go wrong.

I like sewing though, and also make things from scratch.

Tickled it depends on the dress.
One way is to unpick the side seams and move them in however much is needed. This looks smartest and is what I would normally do.
If you need the waist a lot smaller, and it's something casual, it can be easier to add waistband elastic. I find it looks better if I just add it to the back of the waistband, but that could be my body shape (big hips). If there's a lining I just sew it between the layers, but without a lining you'll need to add some fabric to stop the elastic rubbing against your skin.
You could also do shirring at the wait.
