DD sensitive itchy skin

Daisy2315 · 03/08/2018 23:11

Hoping someone has some advice.

Dd12 has been suffering with dry skin around the edge of her nose that is itchy and red. She has also been washing her face using avene gentle cleanser and when she has washed it off her tzone and across her cheekbones are red.

Can anyone advise what products she could try for this.

One thing that is good for redness and itchiness are balms or face oils with Blue Tansy oil and germ

Daisy2315 · 04/08/2018 08:03

Thanks I’ll take a look at those

My skin is very sensitive, combination etc and any kind of cleanser just irritates it. Even stuff like micellar water. Anything designed to then soothe the resulting irritation just increases it. So less is best I think - water, bit of soap at most if you live in a polluted area. If she's young I wouldn't bother with surface cleaners really (but am not a dermatologist so just speaking from experience of what works best for my similar skin to avoid blemishes/discomfort). Have tried a lot since being a teen and my skin is always better when I just leave it alone.
If she wants to stick with the Avène range she could try their Cicalfate cream or XeraCalm for the flaky bits for temporary relief but otherwise I would cut out the facial products and see if that helps things calm down on their own.

Our GP was flummoxed when nothing he prescribed cleared up DD's (similar age as yours at the time) sore nose: fucidin, betnovate, anti fungal cream etc. In the end she just washed with plain water, patted dry with clean flannel and we put diprobase cream on and it cleared up. It just needed moisturising.

It does get sore at times still so I remind her to do her face routine.

Thanks, dd has brought herself some clean and clear items before that made her go red but I thought the avene would be gentler.

I will get her to try just water and see how it goes. Also will look for some diprobase

I'd advise using Lush's Dream Cream - I occasionally get red/irritated/sensitive skin in a similar area, and it's the only thing that soothes mine! It also works wonder on my face in the winter when I get ezcema around the sides of my face - my poor skin was so sore and red, and Dream Cream sorted it in only 2 days, after months of trying all kinds of ezcema-relieving lotions and potions. A pot lasts for ages and ages too, as you only need a dab (my current pot has lasted 18 months!).

I promise I don't work for Lush Grin I was just so happy to get something gentle that worked quickly, so I always recommend it to others.

Daisy2315 · 04/08/2018 10:56

Thanks Daily we are going to the shops later so I will look in lush.

Dd would love for it to clear up so hopefully one of these will work for her

I posted about this yesterday, but I have really sensitive skin and have started using the Dr Organic Rose Otto range from Holland and Barrett, and my redness dry patches have completely disappeared :) as it's organic, maybe it won't irritate your DD's skin so much.

My daughter has very sensitive skin on her face and often gets little patches of irritated, dry looking skin. Even products geared towards sensitive skin don't seem to help. We tried this moo-goo oil cleanser recently and it was amazing!! They have some good moisturiser too, and seems to be a good offer on atm. Highly recommend!!

Thanks for the extra suggestions. I’ll take a look at them all.

OP I would stick to unscentred gentle products like Avene or even Simple. Fragrance can be quite irritating to the skin and if you don’t know what she’s reacting to then this would be safer imo :-)

I've used Avène Extremely Gentle Cleanser in the past but now use Etude House Soon Jung Cleanser. It's super gentle and hasn't upset my stupidly reactive skin. Unfortunately, it's only available online but only takes about 2 wks to arrive. I also highly recommend the toner in the same range. It's hydrating (not cleansing or exfoliating). Pat on a few drops on clean, damp skin. Repeat several layers. It really helps balance out dry patches and skin feels wonderfully soft. Another good one is this. Also, for sensitive/atopic/eczema prone skin. UK seller link.

Meant to add Moogoo are meant to be very good, as another poster mentioned, particularly the Milk Wash and Udder Cream. She should also check her shampoo/conditioner are SLS free.

I have rosacea. I get red cheeks/nose when I'm hot and my skin gets super dry and sensitive. I had a massive flare up 5 weeks ago, even my usual moisturiser burned and dried my skin out. I started using Eucerin Dry Skin Relief Face Cream 5% Urea 4 and a half weeks ago and it's a game changer. The cream restores the skin barrier and makes you less reactive. The first couple of days using it I still went a little pink after moisturising but nowhere near as bad as I was before and that was probably due to my skin being so dry and sore. Less than a week using it and my skin was back to normal. Now it's smooth and supple, no dryness anywhere and when I have makeup on my skin looks so good like I've been airbrushed. I'm getting less reactive to my usual triggers too.

After my success with it I bought my OH the Eucerin 10% urea lotion because his psoriasis was getting really bad on his right arm from the heat and his usual cream wasn't helping at all. Again he saw improvement within a couple of days and 3 and a half weeks later it's almost cleared up.

dd gets something that sounds similar....she is a eczema prone wee creature with iffy skin

she gets good results with dream cream and dream wash, aveeno and stuff from the salcura range (online, all natural stuff)

she tends to cycle through them all but the dream cream/wash is her fall back fail safe if nothing else is working

Daisy2315 · 04/08/2018 22:19

We went to the shops today and we brought her some dream cream to try so will see how it goes. Hanks for the suggestions.

Let us know how she gets on with it, OP - I hope her skin feels better!

Daisy2315 · 06/08/2018 20:36

I will do thanks. She has been using the dream cream morning and night and has said the itching is easing so hopefully it will help.

My DD gets sandpapery patches on her face and we've found that Oilatum skin repair cream sorts them out, I get it or order it from Boots.
