Best make-up remover I’ve tried but allergic to it.

Just bought Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm. I’ve never used a remover that literally took of everything in one go. Five minutes later my eyes started watering and my face feels tight. So disappointing.

I’m going to take it back but does anyone know of anything as effective (or nearly as effective anyhow) that I stand less chance of being allergic to? I have had problems with Clinique in this past but this is unscented so hoped it would be ok. I’m ok with most brands products for sensitive/dry skin like La Roche Posay, Clarins, Avene.

Ultrabland from Lush is really good. If you pop into a shop and ask for a small sample they’ll give you one, which avoids the hassle of taking the pot back if you’re allergic to it. It works similarly - rub it on and remove with a flannel dipped in warm water.

Wow, thanks Plusone. Will check it out.

I agree.... Ultrabland is awesome!!

lauryloo · 31/07/2018 21:48

I love the elemis pro collagen cleansing balm

MissMarplesKnitting · 31/07/2018 21:49

Body shop chamomile cleanser, either oil or balm.

princessbear80 · 31/07/2018 21:53

I use almond oil, it gets everything off in one go, it’s gentle on the skin and fairly cheap.

theredjellybean · 31/07/2018 21:56

I have very sensitive skin, acne roseacea and multi allergies to products. Especially make up.
Even things like bare minerals.
I remove make up with Johnson baby oil.. Amazingly doesn't upset my skin, soothes dry bits and shifts every scrap of make up and dirt.

noodlezoodle · 01/08/2018 00:07

Another vote here for the Body Shop Chamomile cleanser. I have the oil and the balm, and the balm is very similar in texture to the Clinique balm.

Maliali · 01/08/2018 05:46

Thanks all. That’s really useful. Will check all these. Thankfully woken up with non runny eyes and dry face gone.

Johnson’s baby oil and almond oil sound very economical.

Emma Hardie moringa cleansing balm. Pricey but totally luxurious

I have both the Clinique one and the Lush one.

The absolute best makeup remover/cleanser product I have used is the Kiehl’s one (Midnight Recovery Cleanse Oil). It’s expensive, but you can get a sample or a travel size to try it.

The reason why I like it over Clinique TTDO Balm and Lush Ultrabland is that it’s so much easier to use and much less messy, with amazing results. You don’t need a flannel or cotton pads to remove it, you can just water so no faffing. You just apply it, rub it in and rinse it off just like a normal cleanser but it literally removes everything (inc eye makeup) without the residue that you get with the aforementioned products.

*just use water

BagelGoesWalking · 01/08/2018 09:37

I also like Body Shop Camomile Balm Cleanser. If you don't get on with that, you could try Rohto Hadalabo Gokujun Cleansing Oil. It's a popular brand in Korean skincare and meant to be gentle but effective (I haven't tried it yet) but it gets consistently good reviews.

Thank you all so much. Really appreciate all the recommendations. There’s a Kiehls in the station here so when I’m there on fri I’ll see if they have a sample or small size of the recovery cleanse oil.

Kiehl’s should have a sample, it’s one of their bestsellers!

DHC Cleansing Oil is wonderful stuff. The main ingredient is olive oil, but it emulsifies with water, and there's a very gentle soap for after that removes every last trace. About £16 from the website.

BagelGoesWalking · 01/08/2018 15:08

You can get mini duos of DHC on Amazon and eBay as well. Useful to try out and for travel.

Thanks for DHC recommend. I’ve not heard of it but the reviews look v good. I’m going to order the mini duo. So many to try now 🙂

Simple do a cleansing oil that I love. I must have bought 4 bottles by now. It's light & fragrance free. I rub on to get all makeup broken down then wash off with a warm flannel. I get it in my supermarket but it's in Boots too

EttaNat · 03/08/2018 23:48

Try rose cleansing balm from www.egotherapy.co.uk. It’s very gentle.

visitorthedog · 04/08/2018 10:27

Interesting - I am massively allergic to this too and generally haven’t been with anything else. It makes my eyes puff up and almost get burns on the eyelids (I stupidly carried on using it after getting a ‘bleary eyed’ feeling and not realising what it was to start with).

It annoyingly made me sensitive to other things for a while afterwards too, which I’d never struggled with.

fleuriepeninsula · 04/08/2018 11:22

I’m also allergic to this! It makes my eyes puff up red and crusty.

I now love Banila Clean it Zero Purity which is exactly the same premise but not red-and-crusty eye inducing for me.
