I am abroad and had gels nail done today at a local salon.
When she put my fingers under the UV lamp I experienced what I can only describe as the most excruciating burning sensation I have ever felt. It was probably the most painful thing that’s ever happened to me (no I have not given birth yet) but I have had tattoos and ruptured ovarian cysts and I would have rather had one of those.
I am good with pain but fck me. I actually yelped out in pain and all the staff did was turn around and laugh at me and assure me it’s normal. She was also filing my nails and cuticles to the point where they were burning and even bled. When I gasped and pulled my hand away she rolled her eyes. Stupid btch.

Anyway. I’ve been googling and came across what’s known as a heat spike where the gel has been laid on too thick or the nail was overfiled, both of which I’m pretty sure happened.

What I want to know is, is this likely to cause long term damage, and if I want to have them removed in the UK, how should I go about it?

My cuticles are red rawAngry

Hi sorry you have had such a bad experience ! Which country was this in ?
I use a uv lamp daily and although it can feel a little hot (similar to if you have ever used a sunbed) it should not be painful. From what you have described I would say the pain is from the product getting on to the areas or skin/nail that have been over filed or cut.
What kind of file was used on your nails was it an electric type one ? When you say the nails were filed do you mean the beds or just the ends (ie the white bits that grow above your finger ?)
Yes you most certainly will be able to have them removed once you are back in the UK and tbh I wouldn't trust them to remove them properly without further damage or pain. Once you return find a reputable salon in your area. Facebook is often your friend in this case as you can view lots of reviews etc,
My best suggestion is to allow the pain swelling etc to go down before you have them soaked off. If you notice any signs of infection before this I would visit the doctor. An infection could be anything from a hard red lump at the base of the nail which may feel hot to actual puss so keep a very close eye on them. Salt water soaks may help somewhat but I can't really advise as I am not medically trained.
As far as lasting damage is concerned I wouldn't be able to tell without seeing your nails once the gel is removed. I have seen people who have had very bad damage done to the nail and with regular manicures and use of particular products that help strengthen the nail they have completely returned to normal.
I hope this helps a little and again I'm really sorry you had to go through this ! I have worked in salons with technicians who have absolutely zero customer service skills and in some instances no qualifications either Thanks
