What do you wear when it's raining in summer?

I only own dresses and skirts, which I usually wear with black tights in autumn and bare legs in summer. For most of my life, that has been a suitable arrangement.

But what do you do when it's July, and it's too nippy to have your legs out? This is the first year I haven't owned any jeans to act as a failsafe for ambiguous weather (thanks Marie Kondo) and it's started RAINING Shock

Do I have to buy new jeans and thus ruin all my attempts at Kondoing my wardrobe?

Cotton leggings with dresses/skirts.

I think you need cropped jeans yes Confused

Cropped cotton trousers, a cotton blouse and a mac.

I own jeans but haven't worn any for some time now.

I wear a dress and a rain coat on top. You stay cool and mostly dry.

Greenteandchives · 31/07/2018 08:20

I have been very reluctant to put any extra clothes on. You get used to bare legs and no sleeves, so it feels odd, and too hot to put leggings or trousers on.
Carry an umbrella?
I bought one of those folds up pretty macs with a hood in Primark for about £9. It has been so useful.

From many years spent camping in the rain, I've learned that it's best to wear as little as possible in the rain, so shorts & a t shirt. There's not much to get stuck to you as you walk in the rain and it they dry out quickly! 😉

I haven't worn (or owned) jeans for about 8 years. I almost always wear dresses, rain or shine. The only difference when it's raining in summer is that I change my footwear (so no sandals) and I carry an umbrella. No such thing as too nippy to have your legs out in July. There may be other reasons not to have your legs out (such as where I work bare legs is considered inappropriate unless it's scorchingly hot) but the temperature isn't one of them.

I have a very large umbrella

Billydessert · 31/07/2018 11:28

Fit and flare rain mac over your dresses? YY to large umbrella too!

NatalieRushman · 31/07/2018 21:13

Wearing as little as possible is starting to seem like an extremely sensible option funmummy Grin

I lose umbrellas like a 13yo loses PE kits... might have to invest in a long, lightweight rain mac!

Outside of work attire, I have been loving my leather jacket recently (with an umbrella if it’s raining). It’s perfect for nippy weather and still makes an outfit look put together vs a denim jacket (etc). And if you want, you can wear it over your shoulders as a cape - this is perfect for short walks when you want to block the sun from your arms/chest, but don’t necessarily want to wear a jacket and overheat.

I can’t possibly start wearing my longer duster/trench coats again, too hot and annoying to carry around.

I have been loving midi length dresses - look fine both with and without a jacket so I don’t feel over or underdressed.

You don’t necessarily have to buy jeans, you could buy longer length skirts or trousers in different styles (eg wide leg, tapered, brights, patterned etc).

Personally I think it’s a bit too hot for jeans for me right now

Also this might sound strange, but it might be worth carry around tights with you just in case. So you can put them on/take them off as the weather changes. You can also get sheer/lower denier tights than standard black which would be more summer appropriate.

I’m having to carry around extra clothes/umbrella with me just in case as it tends to be raining when I leave the house in the morning, but then ridiculously sunny as the day progresses.
