would you wear this dress if you were a size 24

I rarely wear dresses and lack the confidence to. I've seen this dress half price and want to order it for this winter.

I'm 5 foot 10 but rather dumpy in shape.

I have been a 24, OP, for many years, and though I’m not any longer, I had to learn a useful lesson - ie You deserve to look and feel wonderful at any size. You don’t have to hate your body or make excuses for it. You can look lovely at a size 24 in the same way that someone can look crap at a size 12. Re this particular dress, without seeing it on its hard to tell, but the highish V and the nature of velour might create a shelf effect at boobs and bum. I’d try it and see, but meanwhile would also look at Navabi and Scarlett and Jo. Also some of the boden dresses at a size 22 may well fit. The other dress to consider if you like the shape of this one is the Lyra by Lady V. The neck is a bit lower, skirt a bit fuller, waist more defined. I think they probably still have more summery prints in stock but they usually do a range of rich, plain colours for A/W. Good luck finding your gorgeous :)

ilovecherries · 30/07/2018 16:22

Oh - and ASOS curve!

polyhymnia · 30/07/2018 16:23

Also have been, and am similar height. Like the colour and sleeves, but have doubts about the quality of the material and, as others have said, velour can be shiny and unflattering.

No harm in trying and sending back though.
Have to take issue with you saying you always buy cheapest because you ‘always look awful’. I’m sure you don’t and needn’t. You deserve to look good whatever your size. Personally, I go for best quality I can afford as I need to get maximum boost from best cut, fabric etc.

polyhymnia · 30/07/2018 16:26

See I’ve crossed with ilove making similar point about us all deserving to look great. Also second her recommendation of Boden. Some of their 22s are very generous.

Papergirl1968 · 30/07/2018 16:30

I’m 5ft 7ins and a 24. I had a dress similar to this to wear as a wedding guest. It was a bit longer though and a cranberry coloured velour. It was very comfortable and fairly flattering. It was from jD Williams, and i think it was by Joanna Hope.
I like the green for Christmas.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 30/07/2018 16:31

I would suggest you don't but cheap if you can avoid it.
Could you find something in better material and well cut that could hide the bits you don't like more effectively?
I think you need something more confidence boosting rather than thinking I look crap so I'll buy a crap dress.

ilovecherries · 30/07/2018 16:32

polyhymnia taught me that lesson well on a long running thread here a couple of years ago, when I was emerging from a long period of loathing just about every aspect of myself. A ‘random on the internet’, she really encouraged me to dress well and it was the start of a major transformation - which is still ongoing because we are all, always, a work in progress. :).

Papergirl1968 · 30/07/2018 16:33

Just looked at the link and I’d go for it, but in the longer length especially as you’re tall.

Joe66 · 30/07/2018 16:34

You can dress well and look stylish and sexy whatever your size. It's all about spending a bit of money on the right dress shape and most important of all, the fabric. I have some lovely jersey dresses, but they are quite thick and touch in the right places and would suit a bigger lady. Then it's about shoes, earrings, scarves, necklace, and hair and make up. It's also worth hitting the gym or cycling a couple of days a week to tone up. Sounds as if you need to hit some shops. A void cheap shops. Teenagers and up to size 14s might look good in that stuff but I can't. It hits in all the wrong places.

Ohyesiam · 30/07/2018 16:34

If you have a waist it could still look good.
I’m a 16 but apple shape, so it would look crap on me.
For some reason it reminds me of the shake and vac lady.
Was she in velour? Or maybe just that colour? Who knows.

averylongtimeasspartacus · 30/07/2018 16:37

I am a 20 and 5.6 tall, and would wear that dress - but with good smooth underwear to do away with any lumps and bumps.
The colour and cut are flattering, the neck line nice. If you have big boobs like me, anything too low cut just looks like tits on a plate.

But I would only order it if you can send it back once you have tried it on- if it's skimpy cut, a bit too tight or the material is thin and clingy, don't keep it.

Deadheadstickeronacadillac · 30/07/2018 16:39

Defo defo defo! It is beautiful...I wore similar with leggings when size 28. In fact this style used to be my default in autumn and winter.

Deadheadstickeronacadillac · 30/07/2018 16:40

Where are you based op? I am in Kent and getting rid of wardrobes full of size 24 to 28 clothes including Ralph Lauren if you want.

Piffpaffpoff · 30/07/2018 16:50

Im an 18 and love the shape and the colour but I’d echo previous comments about velour/velvet. It’s very unforgiving! I have been building up a collection of dresses and separates in Ponte fabric, it’s a stiffer, heavier jersey fabric which skims rather than clings. Very very flattering.

kenandbarbie · 30/07/2018 16:52

I would definitely order it and see what it looks like! I think it could be lovely!

Solasum · 30/07/2018 16:53

Can I just sing the praises of full length slips (yes, like your granny used to wear). They make every dress hang better, whatever size you are

New look do lovely size 24 dresses ,I've spent every day since Easter in one ..not the same one 😀.im mid 40s and dress like I'm 20. So I wouldn't wear that actual dress...but if you like it buy it x

Bluntness100 · 30/07/2018 17:45

The blue one and yellow one are fab. Thr black one still a bit frumpy. But still better than the green velour number.

The yellow is gorgeous. The only hesitation I'd have is it might be a bit summery for a Christmas event.

Why not buy it and wear it now? As others said, you deserve to look good.

Member · 30/07/2018 18:19

I think the black one if it’s going to be for an evening do depending on how tight the lace arms are (they look ok on the model but depends on your weight distribution)

The yellow one would be nice for a day look though I.m not keen about the sleeves ending in line with the bust; a cardi would get over that.

A lot depends on shape, I’m similar size but have never had a defined waist even when younger and slimmer. The Scarlett and Jo dress is modelled by someone with a very hourglass shape so I find it hard to envisage it on someone thicker round the middle. And I’m not sure what the quality of the jersey would be like so can’t decide on it.

FeralBeryl · 30/07/2018 18:31

Love the black one OP.
The green one, love the style, the shape, the colour, but not the velour. It clings unforgivably in so many places.
Yellow is gorgeous but quite summery.
DM got some really great dresses in Asda of all places! They do size 24 there now too.

polyhymnia · 30/07/2018 19:36

cherries, many thanks for your nice words! I haven't gone for and achieved a fantastic weight loss like yours ( though I know it would be a Good Thing from point of view of long term health) but still enjoy searching out clothes, accessories, underwear, etc to try to look my best. All a work in progress as you say.
Good luck in the search, OP - you do deserve it.
