Almost dye free!

After following posts over the last couple of years about going dye free, I’ve finally had my hair cut short again and only have a few inches of colour left on the top layer. The hairdresser was very cautious so I’ll go back in a few weeks and get more lopped off and tidied up.

So far no one has been negative, but that’s probably because I’ve been quite vocal about how my allergic reactions to hair dye have become worse in the last 18 months.

Am I the only one going dye free? Am I the only one happy with their newly revealed natural hair colour??

Not at all. I've been almost dye free for about 6 months now.
Just got a bit of Ash Blonde to get rid off then I'm done.
This is the second time I've done this, but I certainly won't be going back to colouring my hair. Can't stand the root regrowth and colouring every four weeks.

hungryhippie · 29/07/2018 11:31

I did the same at the start of the year.
I had it cut into a pixie which im now growing out. If got a tiny bit of hair dye lingering through the front.

Best thing I ever did.

PamsterWheel · 29/07/2018 11:35

When was the last time it was dyed?

Lemonsmakelemonade · 29/07/2018 15:34

I’ve not had my hair highlighted since March so I’ve got at least 4 inches of regrowth but it doesn’t look so bad. My natural colour is mid brown but I’ve only gone 15-20 per cent grey according to my hairdresser. I’ve decided I’m going to grow out the dark blonde and go my natural colour while I still have it!

RageAgainstTheTagine · 29/07/2018 15:37

I'm dye free! I'm not so grey that it was a big 'coming out', but at least now it will be gradual. If I resist the bottle!

EdWinchester · 29/07/2018 15:42

I don't feel ready to embrace the burgeoning grey. But it's easier if your hair is short, I guess.

One of my sisters has gone grey and it looks horrid, so that would put me off. But it can look nice with the right colouring.

GreyIing · 29/07/2018 20:59

Dye free for about 9 months now. I have naturally dark hair so my grays stand out like lighthouses! I don't mind too much, in fact I kind of like my fine silvery highlights , it's wiry texture of them I don't like, though I find Moroccan oil helps.

MrsJonesAndMe · 29/07/2018 21:18

I've been dye free for about 5 years now. Grey starting to become more noticeable, but meh...

Looks good!

SwedishEdith · 29/07/2018 21:48

One of my sisters has gone grey and it looks horrid

That would be quite handy though - having a sister who be a crash test dummy for you on this.

FirstTimePetitioner · 29/07/2018 21:52

I'm late 20s and growing out my hair to be dye-free! Never dying it again.

I like your salt and pepper hair, OP.

Peoplemaynoticeus · 29/07/2018 21:57

I've had highlights put through so I can begin to go dye free. At the front I have a solid 2 inch patch which is pure white. I was needing to colour every 2 weeks.

Peoplemaynoticeus · 29/07/2018 21:58

I'm 33 btw and have had the patch since I was 15!

PamsterWheel · 29/07/2018 22:01

Are any of you OP with name change fail?

doctorboo · 30/07/2018 07:23

Morning! Sorry I didn’t pop back yesterday, we were out and about.

@PamsterWheel Let me have a look through my old posts, I think I replied to a thread around March or April with my last fall off the dye-free wagon. I definitely used permanent colour at the beginning of this year and at some stage only coloured the top layer of my hair (hence why there’s still a chunk at the side and front).

@Knowivedonewrong How long did you stay dye free the first time? I won’t be able to put on anything more than a wash-in colour but not sure I want that.
My cousin was colour free for years and had a nice sparkle to her hair, she’s recently bleached it and put on a bright colour. It’s extremely short though so she could be dye free again in two months.

@hungryhippie that’s fab! Will you keep a longer style once your 100% colour free? I had a pixie 2.5 years ago and only kept it for a little while.

@Knowivedonewrong It’ll be so much easier! Wish I’d done it that way. I had my youngest and in the last three years suddenly went very grey!

@RageAgainstTheTagine Resist the dye! Haha, actually I’m not anti hair dye I just can’t use it.

@EdWinchester I like that you’ve been able to see how going grey has gone for your sister. I’m the greyest out of all our family (female wise), only my cousin wanted to be colour free - until last month!

@GreyIing 9 months is good! I use Moroccan oil too, plus deep conditioner to tame it. I’m natural curly so I usually look a bit wild.

@MrsJonesAndMe Five years is great! Anyone suggested colouring it now more grey is showing?

@FirstTimePetitioner How have you found it so far? I like the fact there’s different ways to approach it.

@Peoplemaynoticeus That’s going to look amazing. Is it like a Rogue (x-men) stripe? I started going grey very young too but it took too 32/33ish, plus the hives and tight throat 🙈 to make the decision.

Boo I was colour free for about 3 months then after comments from close family I coloured it again. I've had it short for all this time, I'm now growing it long.

hungryhippie · 30/07/2018 10:26

Yes, im growing the pixie out now. I dont suit it short to be honest. I only did it to speed up getting rid of the colour.
Im at that awkward growing out stage now. A bit like a mullet and sticking out in all directions Grin

kaitlinktm · 30/07/2018 10:36

Finally growing mine at at age 63 - who did I think I was kidding? Grin Like a pp I could have dyed it every 2 weeks. I haven't dyed it since September, so 11 months - but I think my hair must be growing more slowly as it's taking ages. The top is fairly white but at the back it's darkish still. I wish I hadn't bothered dyeing all these years TBH. Can't cope with a short cut as I have a huge fat face and body. Blush

Wearing it tied back or up disguises it a bit - also a friend wears an alice band type thing to disguise her roots, but I can't seem to get the hang of it (or even find one).

Peoplemaynoticeus · 30/07/2018 10:49

Just googled rogue but yes it's like that a solid white stripe. It's not grey it's completely white. I'm hoping I can pull it off, I dress quite hippy.

MrsJonesAndMe · 30/07/2018 13:38

Luckily I have a resting bitch face and no one would dare suggest anything LOL Wink

I'm only late 30's so not too much and hair reasonably light in summer which helps.

CocoaGin70 · 30/07/2018 13:49

I'm 47 and asked the hairdresser a year ago to help me grow out my grey hair and I was getting terrible headaches from the colour. I'm naturally dark, very dark with silver grey. Somehow I've ended up with so many blonde highlights that I'm actually blonde, and my hair is like straw. It's just not my hair anymore Sad

Trying a new hairdresser next week, but seriously considering a crop cut even though it's a few inches past my shoulders. Yours looks fab OP.
