Baby bag that's not one

Did anyone just use an ordinary bag as a baby bag? I'd quite like to get a naice bag to use instead. My old baby bag was horrible and I'd like to be able to use a new one after baby stage. I thought I could get zipped pockets inside to keep things in. Can't you even get a purpose made zip thing that does this?

I just used my handbag but I only had spare nappy, wipes, spare vest or babygrow so I suppose it depends how much stuff you take. You can get really nice large handbags, tote style though.

Baby bags are just things to sell you. How are they different from any other bag, really?

kenandbarbie · 26/07/2018 13:38

Yeah all I'll need is change of clothes, muslin, nappies, bottle, formula holder thing, wipes.

This looks handy but it's expensive.

yep I have 2 DC 3 and 1 and have never ever had a changing bag. I just got a bag and always take a spare set of clothes for each a drink maybe a snack then few nappies and wipes.

I'm currently using my longchamp pliage as my baby bag, it's waterproof, washable and can fit everything in. Plus it doesn't look like a baby bag.

I just wrapped the wipes, nappy and vest in one of those tiny changing mat things-it took up the size of a largeish pack of wipes. I just left it in my bag. I’m not sure if you are taking bottles, formula, etc whether they would spill if just put in the bag and you need a holder to keep them upright.

My bags were just smallish hobo type bags with above in plus my phone, purse, keys, maybe a bottle of water.

I had a zippy plastic pouch I bought from Paperchase that held the basics that I just shifted to whatever bag I was using.

I also use a Longchamp, it’s like the pilage but with a luggage strap. Changing mat courtesy of amazon and done.

mine is an actual baby bag but it’s so handy I use it for loads & not specifically as a baby bag. It’s a Marc Jacobs one I got on sale, huge, squidgy, light & lots of pockets. Great for the beach, swimming, flying etc

I got one of these from Matt and Nat. It’s so lovely and looks nothing like a nappy bag

wheezing · 26/07/2018 17:16

I really regret buying a changing bag. How much space does a nappy and a wipes really take up? The nappy bag just became my handbag.

I have the Mia tui rucksack and tote bag for general (non-baby change) use, but they also come with extras to make them into change bags. I really like them.

I use a Longchamp Le Pilage with the mini organiser from Storksak inside. Works really well as keeps things a bit more organised. Also have a KeriKit Joy backpack which I love now that I have a toddler and need to be hands free!

I do have a large leather stork sack bag that I bought with my first. I use it for the first few months when I seem to need a lot of stuff and when I need to take out weaning stuff, then it doubles as a weekend bag as its a bit too large for everyday use long term.
Can’t personally stand the really obvious changing bags - you know the type - patterned fabric, say yummy mummy etc.

I loved my long champ bag as it is wipe clean and got a lot of use out of it with my first two kids before it died.

Recently been using a cheap crossbody bag especially for days out. So handy. Sonasked dh for a nice leather one for my birthday. It’s a John Lewis leather tan one with a bit of a bucket bottom so Just Enligh space for a small change mat with nappies, wipes etc. Just got it and love it so far.

But yes specific baby bag not neccessary. Having said that I don’t use bottles so that might make a difference.

I use a naice leather rucksack instead - way more practical when you also have a toddler in tow and the shoulder straps hang nicely off the back of the pram. I bought a SkipHop double bottle bag to put in it in case I need to keep any milk, food etc warm or cold.

I had a couple of change bags (Pacapod, Mothercare) and ended up putting them on eBay. They're heavy before you even put anything in them, and tbh if you're breastfeeding you probably don't need to carry around that much stuff, just a couple of nappies, small pack of wipes, a muslin and a babygrow. The biggest problem I had with nappy bags is they're a pain to carry if you're using a sling, so I ended up using a rucksack that I already owned instead. Might treat myself to a nice Sandqvist one in the future.
