I need to get my hair lighter. Please help!

Cannot really afford to go to a salon so I need some in house help please!

Have been dying my hair for years. Greys are now out of control and rather than dying black I'm thinking about going to lighter to have the greys blend in. Have no idea where to start though.

Have had bleaching mishaps in the past and have never really gotten my hair to anything lighter than a mild orange colour.

Any tips at all please? Or am I best trying to save up and go get it done professionally?

I dyed my hair very dark brown for years, and had good results with those colour removers. Have you tried one of those yet? Mind you my hair has never been past my shoulders so the ends didn't have years of build up.

It turned my hair an auburn colour and I then dyed over it with a packet dye close to my natural colour (which is brown). I think I'd quite like to go a bit lighter though.

You need to bleach to go lighter. And then tone after. It's a myth that bleach alone is enough to get the best results unless you are having highlights which is a bit different.

If you went Orange the bleach wasn't strong enough or not left on long enough.

Buy professional products rather than a kit from boots.

I am platinum blonde. To achieve this I use either loreal platine or wella blondor bleach and a 40% wella developer to lift my hair to a light blonde level 10. I am naturally blonde around a 7-8 but my hair is resistant and will not go light enough without hard-core options. There are also high lift tints that are slightly less than bleach but I don't get as good a result but it depends on your hair really.

After the bleach you have to tone it to get a good shade. I use a variety of professional toners with wella pastel developer because you are adding tone and not colour at this stage. That turns the pale yellow level 10 to platinum. The toner only works if the base is light enough.

In short unless you are experienced pay for a hairdresser to go blonde as it's high maintenance!

I meant adding tone and not lightening any more rather than 'colour'

Been a long day!

Urgh, if you have had a past bad experience with bleach, I don’t think things have moved on much. I did too as a teenager. Went bright orange. Disaster. Last time I got my hair done I went to a different hairdresser. Just wanted highlights. She said that they wouldn’t cover the grey and I should go blonde blonde. Now I have always wanted to be blonde blonde. But I was sceptical and told her about my previous experience. Not to worry, a hi-lift. Quells surprise I can out orange again. It was a bloody disaster. That is with a qualified hairdresser with all the strong developers and what not. I got a semi put in to make me not look like a clown and I don’t really know where I’m going to go from here. I’m 100% grey around my hairline down to my temples. My hair is shitty anyway, coarse and wavy and I’d love to shave the whole damn thing off. Even with professional permanent dye, the grey is out again within a fortnight.
