Henna that’s dark brown with no red undertones

Does anyone know if such a thing exists. My hair is medium/dark brown, straight, fine, dry, porous and brittle so I only dare use something natural and non permanent on it. I have grey strands dotted throughout but no really noticeable (i don’t think). Ideally I’d like something ready mixed if there is such a thing. I’ve not coloured it for at least 15 years so am guessing things have moved on in the colouring world. Has anyone got any recommendations please. I’m wanting a rich chocolate brown with no red.

I THINK that henna will always have red undertones. Lush do a nice one called caca brun, but it still has hints of red in it. I think (again) they also have a black version, perhaps you could mix the two for a darker result?

Ah ok I didn’t realise henna all had the red undertones in. Do you know of any organic non semi permanent dyes that are good? I’d not have the confidence to mix two henna colours together. I’d be scared of what final result would be.

I haven't a clue I'm afraid. I know you can get powdered henna, I'm not sure if you'd have a few more options with that? If you find the holy grail of chocolate brown sans red I'd love to know, because I've been searching for that for years!

Naturatint hair dye is worth a look. Not sure if they do a semi permanent but it's all natural and they do a lot of colours, many without any red tint.

You can get very dark henna without an obvious red tint, however most henna will have a red undertone.

Thanks Barry will go take a look at that. And will update if I find chocolate sans red beargrylls

I really like the red Lush ones but I used the brown one alone recently (I usually do half & half) and it was very dull.

Maliali · 23/07/2018 22:17

Thanks clitterati the lush brown one sounds a possibility. Will check that out when I’m next in town.

My natural colour is mousy brown, and when I used Lush brown henna years ago it gave me distinct reddish glints and and actual orangey undertone that only disappeared when it grew out. If that's not what you want it isn't the dye for you.

Herbatint is very good - i

Daniel Fields [ there are two company - only one is genuine] have very gentle hair dyes and excellent customer service.

But be warned - the colours come up very dark - so its always good to ask the customer services

I recently used one by Surya. I got it from Amazon. Its ready mixed and very easy to use. I used the light blonde one...which didnt lighten my mousy hair but did cover the greys. Its worn off after a few weeks though. Fortunately unlike chemical hair dyes you can keep the leftovers, so i have enough left to do it again.

They have a lot of non red shades.

doobie. Thanks for the heads up
About the lush brown henna. I will take look at Surya and Daniel Field. Thanks for the info everyone

You can mix henna with indigo to get varients of brown or even black. Loads o google. Depending on how brown or black you want it the more indigo you need to add to the henna.

I order Henna Maiden from the US, they have various shades and the instructions include adding salt or lemon to tailor the tone
