Cleaning birkies

rightknockered · 23/07/2018 16:47

My birkies are filthy. They are sticky, stained, and in a pretty disgusting state all round. How do I clean them? I don't think I can put them in the washer, the footbed might get ruined. But if I must, I will, and then buy a new pair if it all goes wrong.

Are they leather? Suede?
Assuming that they are dry, I would use a cloth or a very soft brush to loosen any dust or dirt then use white vinegar to clean.
This is how I clean my leather ones.
I wouldn't put any shoes in the washing machine but I will hand wash trainers if I absolutely have to.

Mybabystolemysanity · 23/07/2018 18:02

I too would love to know if there's a good way to clean/deodorise the footbed, both leather and synthetic. Watching with interest!

ChristmasTablecloth · 23/07/2018 18:04

You can't wash them in the machine. Wet the footbed with cold water. Scrub gently with antibacterial washing up liquid (I use an old toothbrush). Rinse. Dry in the shade. Wrap in a plastic bag and freeze for at least 24 hours.

Washing up liquid and Jif on a sponge and scrub. I've sealed the cork bottoms/sides with clear varnish.

thedevilinablackdress · 23/07/2018 18:10

Sponge, soap, water 😀

holycityzoo · 24/07/2018 09:50

I've washed mine loads in the washing machine. They've been fine.

Pinkkahori · 24/07/2018 10:23

I washed my leather Mayaris in the machine recently as they were getting smelly.
They don't look much cleaner but the smell has gone.
They are very old though so I wasn't too worried that they would be ruined.

ThisIsHistory · 24/07/2018 16:40

Quick wipe/spray with hand sanitiser on the footbed/inside straps. Washing up liquid and brush/scouring sponge on sole. I use trainer deodoriser spray on them sometimes, between cleans.

Jb291 · 24/07/2018 16:48

Mine go in the washer regularly and they are fine. Gets them clean and deodorises them

humblesims · 24/07/2018 18:28

Really! Just in the wash? Leather ones?

MikeUniformMike · 24/07/2018 18:53

I wouldn't.

One of these has to work!

lateshifts · 24/07/2018 20:41

I accidentally wore mine in the sea (rogue wave) last week and they came out good as new. They're the black Madrid ones. This is probably not an advisable cleaning method though Grin

MikeUniformMike · 24/07/2018 21:23

Watch out for rusty buckles

holycityzoo · 24/07/2018 21:53

Yes humblesims mine are the white two strap leather ones they are on their fifth year now.
I unbuckle them then just chuck them in on a 30 wash with a bit of powder then just leave them to air dry.
I've never had an issue. The soles feel a tiny bit rougher but not all uncomfortable.

MissVanjie · 24/07/2018 21:54

I bung mine in the washer

rightknockered · 26/07/2018 02:21

I've washed with Fairy liquid and a nail brush. They're now drying, don't seem to smell, stains are gone. Will see tomorrow

They're khaki green leather ones, really like them and everywhere sold out in my size so hope this works

Just washed my mayari and Madrid yesterday in the washing machine for the first time and they have washed brilliantly, also the Cork was cracked on the Madrid so I've used gorilla wood glue on the Cork of both pairs and it has dried lovely.
