booking makeup lesson/makeover for older woman;ideas?

Hi all,

I'm 55, (this is relevant Grin) and my son's getting married in 3 weeks. Daytime party in a tipi in a field, all very boho.

I'd like my make up to be on point on the day, and have booked a make up lesson (no doubt leading to ££££ of product purchases) with Charlotte Tilbury in Covent Garden for the week before. .
Looking online though I'm not sure they're right for me, reviews often say they slap loads of primer and harsh looking makeup on, and it's done in a cellar with no natural lighting.

I obviously don't want to look ridiculously over the top but equally I'm not bad looking for my age, size 10, toned, natural bit of tan, expensively coiffed and all that, and don't want anything toooo subtle/old ladyish. Once had a makeover in John Lewis and came away looking like I had none on.

Any recommendations?
TIA

I would recommend Bobby Brown make up lessons. Also Liberty is good for stuff like showing you how to do things ( not on a Saturday).

You can also see Bobby Brown lessons on YouTube

look here lots of locations all over the UK and in london

Definitely Bobbi Brown. I love their makeup and looks. Have a look at Hannah Martin on YouTube and Instagram for ideas.

Another vote for Bobbi Brown

Both MAC and Tom Ford have shops in Covent Garden and offer makeovers. Both great. Both with friendly, helpful staff. If you have a look at both you’ll probably find you prefer one to the other.

I’d choose either over Charlotte Tilbury.

Peanutbuttercups21 · 21/07/2018 13:08

I think the Tilbury look is quite a "done"' look

For a tipi in the field wedding, I'd go minimal make up really

I went to Bobbi Brown in Covent as a woman in her late 30s who doesn’t normally wear makeup. If they thought I was a frump (I was worried about being judged by younger, glamorous types) they didn’t show it. They were lovely. I didn’t have a formal lesson actually, just a make over and then bought some stuff they’d used. But I’d recommend them. Nice natural look which I wanted, pleasant staff, good products.

NicoAndTheNiners · 21/07/2018 13:12

I think if I’d wanted a more “done” look they’d have done it. They offered me options at every step and explained which were more natural and which a bit more obvious and asked which I wanted to try.

Brill, thanks all! I'll cancel CT & book BB, as that's pretty much unanimous!

I also came on to say bobby brown, however if you’re looking for things you’ll wear a lot then bare minerals are also really good.

I used to be a fan of Mac, but I had a makeover with Bobbi Brown staff and it was fantastic. She really listened to what I wanted, and I came out looking lovely and not a 'face full of slap' which is so not me

Mumblechum0 · 21/07/2018 13:58

Tis booked Smile Thanks all xxx

Good choice, I am a bit older than you and recently had a wonderful session with Bobbi Brown, came away with perfect products to make me look groomed but natural. Young make up artist but she could not have been more helpful and knew her stuff.
Enjoy the wedding! How exciting for you .

Deathraystare · 21/07/2018 15:12

Enjoy your makeover! Come back and tell us all about it!

I had Clinique for both my daughters' weddings. Bobbi Brown was good too and I looked amazing but wasn't sure I could replicate it.

ProperLavs · 21/07/2018 19:20

That's good OP, don't EVER go to MAC. I made that mistake aged 48 a couple of years ago and came away looking like coco the clown- I had asked for subtle. I had brown lipliner round bright orange lipstick. Seriously.

XingMing · 21/07/2018 19:36

Bobbi Brown in Covent Garden are lovely, very helpful and generally talented. And while I'd agree that MAC's staff lean to the heavily made up look, they are well trained in suggesting the right colours and formulations for most people. I've been buying a couple of their products (Skin Mineralize Powder mainly) and have always been directed to the same product/same colour after product reformulation. But I would resist one of their full makeovers!

SpeckledyHen · 23/07/2018 19:57

Another vote for Bobbi Brown . They listen to what you say and don’t do the hard sell either. I loved the natural look they did for my mature face .

SpeckledyHen · 23/07/2018 19:58

Oops too late . Just seen that you have booked B.B.
