So, dye, highlight or go au naturel?

I have reached the age where my hair is going grey. Up to now I have been plucking out the offending hairs, but the time has come to either embrace it or do something about it.

I used to have highlights, but since having kids spending an afternoon at the salon every 6-8 weeks has not really been an option. What do others do? I don't know where to start with colouring products in the supermarket. Are they any good, or do I need to go to the hairdresser? Help me please!

Buy Majirel professional dye and do it yourself. Loads of threads on here re how to.

Use an old toothbrush around your hairline for better application.

I am not a professional but have been dyeing mine for years and find Majirel streets ahead re outcome being true to colour, hair that feels better afterwards and longevity.

You can also get ash/ cool toned browns which are almost impossible to find in the high street ones. They invariably turn hair witchy black.

What colour do you need/want?

I use 6.1 to get this sort of shade....

Thanks IwankaTramp. Mine is a little lighter than that, but not much. Is it something I can buy on the high street?

Online stockists are cheapest but I think Sally’s sell it. I buy mine from either EBay or Amazon. You can then just mix up exactly what you need each time so it is very cost effective.

If yours is lighter you are probably looking at a level 7. Is it cool or warm toned?

IwankaTramp · 17/07/2018 20:26

This sort of level but with warm or cool examples..l

Get a plastic bowl and a silicone brush (like you'd use for egg washing pastry or similar) from a pound shop to help you apply the dye evenly and easily.

I think I would be warm toned? In certain lights it can have a dark gold / bronze appearance.

If you can post a photo of your hair in a good light - (just blur your face out ) I can try and help you find a good match. 🙂

A semi permanent is all you need for now. It will give your hair a nice shine and not dry it out.
If you've gone so far as to pluck out the greys I don't think you're ready to embrace them.
