Sun cream brands (cheaper the better!)

As a family of 6 we get through bucketloads of sun cream every year, especially on holiday. We're away for 3 weeks this year for the first time and its so expensive to buy locally. Out of habit I've normally just gone to Boots and bought the biggest bottles I can but wondering if there are any own brands from supermarkets, superdrug etc which are worth considering ?

What was?

40andfeelingit · 15/07/2018 17:49

Another vote for Superdrug own brand - Solait. 5 star rated and normally on buy one get one half price. Like Aldi’s own as well but the Superdrug one seems to leave less yellow stains on everything

LockedOutOfMN · 15/07/2018 17:52

Played in a sports' tournament last week and the player next to me was using Solait cream from Superdrug; it smelled amazing!

Daily Mail has had two recent stories of children being sunburned while allegedly using Asda suncream.

We use La Roche Posay and are really happy with it. I definitely think it's worth the price. Stores often have buy one get one half price offers too.

Malibu-£3.99 from Home Bargains. It smells lush too!

We always used to Nivea etc but changed to Aldi last year. DS2 didn’t burn in Turkey in August which was a first.

I don’t trust Calypso since there was a bad batch a few years ago I got burnt in Cape Verde.

Suncream related question-
how do you pack toiletries to go in your case? I'm packing sun cream, showergels, shampoo /conditioner etc to go in the hold .
I used to have one of those Vac'n'Seal things that were brilliant but not any longer.

Double bag? The Bacofoil Zipper ones - would that work?
Need to be leakproof and Baggage Handler Proof .

( Hand luggage not so worried about as I know its the 100ml in the plastic bag routine)

MumOfTwoMasterOfNone · 15/07/2018 19:30

Aldi. Especially the kids sensitive one, which is the only one we've found that we can use on DS. Cheap and brilliant protection.

i highly recommend Wilko, about £3- 3.50 for 500mls factor 50 and have high uva/uvb ratings.

im very ivory, not even fair toned and i apply a good thick layer first thing and then top up with a lighter slather.

when i go to really hot places (Greece etc), if im out all day i put several thick layers on.

BuntyCollocks · 15/07/2018 20:46

Calypso once a day - amazing stuff

Rosiepicnic · 15/07/2018 20:50

Another vote for aldi! Only tried it this year & really impressed, our v pale skin has remained unburnt for once!

paddlingwhenIshouldbeworking · 16/07/2018 10:11

Great, thanks everyone! We have an Aldi so will pop there first.

Unfortunately the Aldi factor 50 isn't a regular product and in all my local stores its sold out :-(
Gutted I only bought one bottle and with the weather we've had its all gone. They had a small roll on but its tiny, hard to use and has already run out as well because its so small.

Please be careful with Malibu sunscreen. It has a recall on it at the moment.

Sabulous · 16/07/2018 17:23

We used to use Aldi, but it has started staining clothes yellow :( just started using Wilko and so far so good.

Fairyliz · 16/07/2018 17:48

One of the magazines think it was Good Housekeeping did a review of sun cream and the cheaper brands came out just as good and in some cases better than the high end brands.

As another poster said as long as it has five stars that is the important thing.

‘High protection’ suncream recalled after being accidentally filled with no-SPF tanning oil Around 200 bottles of Malibu SPF30 are being recalled for containing the wrong product, putting shoppers who believe they are protecting their skin from the sun during the heat wave at risk of burns (Photo: Trading Standards) i Team 2 weeks Tuesday July 3rd 2018 The i newsletter News for open-minded people. Bottles of high protection suncream are being pulled from the shelves – because they have been filled with fast tanning oil, which has no SPF, by accident. Around 200 bottles of Malibu 30SPF are being recalled for containing the wrong product, putting shoppers who believe they are protecting their skin from the sun during the heat wave at risk of burns. A statement on the Trading Standards website reads: “If you have purchased one of these products DO NOT USE IT … IT IS NOT SPF30!” Full refund According to manufacturers, the suspect lotions are thought to be on sale at Home Bargains. Problem bottles will display the batch number of 18086 on the packaging. “Customers should not use the oil and return it to their nearest Home Bargains store for a full refund,” the company said. ‘Orange pump spray’ Malibu added that the correct product should have an orange pump spray and not a brown flip top. Only in-store products – not online stock – is thought to have been affected. Anyone who has purchased an incorrectly packaged product can contact the manufacturer on 01923 289470, or Home & Bargains on 0151 530 2929.
