Removing hair from arms

Just wondering, how many people do this here?
Friend I'm going away with just had arms waxed, admittedly darker hair than me but...

Made me wonder,

I remove underarm hair, leg hair, personal hair, and also hairs on my toes and near the knuckles yet I never touch my arm hair.

Why is arm hair deemed acceptable and yet all other hair (except hair on the head of course) is deemed ought to be removed?

Mine was very dark, I hated it, had it lasered off about 10 years ago and it made a big difference to my confidence and how I felt about myself generally. I just wished I'd done it earlier (I'd been meaning to for several years; the first attempts with early lasers hurt too much, then later I kept thinking that the stubble and ingrown hairs from shaving them during the lasering would look even worse, whereas leg stubble was 'normal'.)

Close friend with similarly dark hair also hates hers, and arm hair was a frequent topic of conversation for us in teens and twenties, but she hasn't managed to get the same done due to combination of contraindicated medicines, less money, and the Lumea I got her as a present just not being strong enough for the job.

Celebrities are getting it removed too - I remember hearing a long time ago, from someone who'd worked with her, that a certain female TV presenter had very hairy arms. I can see it in old pics of her but by the late 00s it had disappeared. Madonna evidently did the same at some point - hers disappeared from photos too.

I remember a girl at school who was naturally blonde but was quite hairy, having a conversation that she should start shaving her arms. I didn't know her very well so I'm not sure what she did.

And (though I can't remember the source, read it a long time ago) arm hair was apparently a concern for upper class late Victorian and Edwardian women who wore sleeveless evening gowns.

I think arm hair on women is culturally similar to vellous hair: people who are so inclined only start worrying about it when it's noticeable. You don't hear a lot of conversations either about belly hair like in the pic that's the thumbnail for this ad: www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/video/2018/jul/11/advert-breaks-taboos-by-showing-women-shaving-their-body-hair-video

I’ve shaved my arms for years! I shave them once a week.

I used to 'immac' mine when I was a teenager, but I don't bother now because I'm old and my arms have gone bald

megletthesecond · 14/07/2018 14:46

I bleached mine for 30 years. They've got finer now I'm middle aged so I'm not so self conscious.

I did consider waxing them but I'm prone to ingrowing hairs, it's bad enough dealing with them on my legs.

rightknockered · 14/07/2018 15:42

I use a Lumea on mine, would recommend

AlrightBabby · 14/07/2018 21:47

I use an epilator on mine, have done for years and it doesn't hurt at all nowadays. I don't have particularly dark hair but it grows in a million directions and looks such a mess!

HildaZelda · 15/07/2018 11:09

I bet you it's not half as bad as you think. My friend gets her arms waxed because she's convinced that they're really hairy. They're honestly not. She sees it as a lot worse than what's actually there.

Zoflorabore · 15/07/2018 11:11

Shave mine too, once a week.
I have very dark hair, literally takes me two minutes.

likeacrow · 15/07/2018 11:16

No. I have fairly dark hair on my arms but there are enough other things to have to do as a woman. I'm not adding that onto the list of self maintenance jobs too.

chipsandpeas · 15/07/2018 11:25

i shave my arms as well with a lady shave

formerbabe · 15/07/2018 12:03

I used to shave...they don't end up stubbly at all, unlike my legs! I epilate my arms and legs now...lasts much longer.

NC4Now · 15/07/2018 12:05

I shave mine. Have done for years. I have dark hair and fair skin.
I love my freshly shaved arms!

Effendi · 15/07/2018 12:08

I live in Cyprus and many of the local women do this. I don't and I suppose to them I'm a bit odd!

lenalove · 16/07/2018 10:25

I have mine waxed once every 6 weeks or so, works like a charm!
