Cashmere. Is this right?!

I've got to 44 without having owned any cashmere. It's bloody cold here and I saw some online for a decent price (jumper dress for £70, sweater for £45 etc).

They've just turned up and I can't help but say I'm disappointed. I thought cashmere was lovely and soft whereas this is scratchy and feels like it's got twigs in it?!

Is cashmere supposed to be scratchy and twiggy or have I got a bum deal by buying cheap?

And I had ideas of being all glam and grown upSad

Where did you buy it from? Cashmere is meant to be very soft, yes. I'm sorry yours is twiggy! Can you return it?

Nakedavenger74 · 11/07/2018 11:07

From an NZ sale site. Made in Italy apparently. Even aside from twiggy bits it's just itchy!!

I think you got something dodgy. I buy cheap cashmere and the main difference between it and the high quality stuff is it's longevity. It feels the same in the first instance but tends to pill more, lose it's shape etc. But it is still soft. Sorry to hear you got a scratchy option.

SixSquared · 11/07/2018 11:10

Doesn't sound right to me. Real cashmere is lovely and soft

Nakedavenger74 · 11/07/2018 11:13

Yeah. Even the pieces without twigs are so... itchy!!! My worst nightmare!

It does not sound like cashmere. - Can you return it.
Real cashmere is so very soft and yes, cheap cashmere pills horribly, but it still stays soft.
What does it say on any tags inside the garment.

Nakedavenger74 · 11/07/2018 11:26

Hmmm just checked the label. The brand has Cashmere in the name.
The ingredients label states 35% merino, 30% viscose, 20% cashmere and 15% something else I can't remember.
Totally taken for a ride. It's all going back.

Sounds like you got caught out. For affordable real cashmere have a look at Uniqlo.

RickOShay · 11/07/2018 11:41

I buy some cashmere from ebay. It can be hit and miss, but more hits.
I am wearing a purple gap cashmere cardigan now which is beautiful and was £15.00 including postage, but the last one i bought was a disaster and is now a cat blanket. Grin

Mercurial123 · 11/07/2018 11:45

If you want decent cashmerefor a good price buy vintage. I always got Ballantyne from eBay. The quality is amazing far superior to the high street.

ExConstance · 11/07/2018 11:51

If you want wonderful soft cashmere at a bargain price buy a couple of vintage pieces on ebay. It gets better with washing and the aged pieces were better quality to begin with. Failing that just save up and buy something classic from Brora in the sale (their sales are genuine and have good reductions). I have lots of Brora in my wardrobe and have bought it one piece at a time over the last 12 years, all still pristine and regularly worn.

BlingLoving · 11/07/2018 13:25

The merino is the scratchy bit probably. A little cashmere is pointless. All or nothing I say.

Thanks for tip on Brora sales. I didn't realise they did good sales. I have never been able to buy anything from there but have long wanted to....

Bejazzled · 11/07/2018 14:35

RickOShay
I have visions of a very pampered puss cosying up in its cashmere bed 🙂

IwankaTramp · 11/07/2018 14:44

Agree all a bit of cashmere does is pill. I hate that thing of calling something a cashmere mix and then you read the label and the mix constitutes 4%.

Good cashmere I have found on eBay from the following companies:

Pure Collection -but get the brown label if you can as this in my experience is earlier better quality.

Repeat

Johnston’s of Elgin

You are right! It’s looking decidedly worse for wear now though after they have snoozed on it.

Ginorchoc · 11/07/2018 15:49

Sounds like a cashmere mix.

Ginorchoc · 11/07/2018 15:50

Oh and Belinda Robertson cashmere is lovely !

MidLifeCrisis2017 · 11/07/2018 18:29

TK Maxx good for cashmere, usually around September

AndromedaPerseus · 11/07/2018 18:36

Good quality cashmere has a silk like sheen and it’s like burying yourself in a Persian cat

MerryDeath · 11/07/2018 19:25

yes it should be comfortable on bare skin. like many things there is cashmere and then there is cashmere. boden is scratchy (and £100 a sweater) and brora is soft as can be (£350 a sweater)

Lotsofsausage · 11/07/2018 21:09

uniqlo cashmere is good - go up a size though

These are the best (imho )

goose1964 · 11/07/2018 22:47

A warning though Cashmere is like catnip to clothes moths so if you have any in the house use a moth repellent

Nakedavenger74 · 12/07/2018 08:45

Thanks all. I have learned my lesson. I'm saving up for something beautiful.
Not a twiggy poncho...
