What eye glass frame styles are in now?

I'm currently wearing large, rectangular, black frames. I need a new pair and was wondering which styles are in fashion now. My face is large square-ish.

Slightly rounder versions of those have been around in fashion stuff for a couple of years or so. If you are on a budget and your existing frames are in decent condition I would just get a reglaze of them because the current trends look pretty similar - most are still based around heavy, obvious acetate frames. The subtle variations may be worth getting if you can afford new frames every year or so and you find something that you really like and which suits you.

MsHomeSlice · 10/07/2018 11:33

i think it is still geekchic stylewise, but heading towards the rounder shapes and lighter colours not such burly frames.

I just got HIghgate in crystal from glassesdirect and am very pleased with them

I have these in granite they are really great quality.

Ironfloor269 · 10/07/2018 18:23

Thanks. I’ll have a look on the website.

I’m on the lookout for a pair of rather obvious, black or tortoise shell rimmed, rounds glasses.

London Retro have quite a few frames in that sort of style.

Ironfloor269 · 13/07/2018 09:52

Thank, you, @ScreamingValenta, I've just ordered some London Retro style glasses for a home trial from Glasses Direct.

ScreamingValenta · 13/07/2018 09:56

Ooh, which ones did you go for? Hope they suit you when they arrive. I've got the Sweeney in silver and the Albany in tortoise.

PickAChew · 13/07/2018 09:57

The plastic trend is really annoying me because they just don't work with my narrow bony nose. Desperately need new frames, too.

ScreamingValenta · 13/07/2018 09:58

@PickAChew What sort of styles suit you?

PickAChew · 13/07/2018 10:03

Fairly heavy but not too dark. My choice is further restricted by needing 140mm arms. Currently have quite thick purple titanium frames but they're getting scruffy.

ScreamingValenta · 13/07/2018 10:07

Is your prescription suitable for buying online?

Ironfloor269 · 13/07/2018 10:32

I've got a free prescription from Specsavers, which I'm going to enter on the Glasses Direct website and order the glasses from there.

OP posts:
PickAChew · 13/07/2018 19:53

I have varifocals and a bit of a squint so online is out of the question.

pennycarbonara · 13/07/2018 20:26

It sounds like you need to try lots on or find somewhere to browse online that lists bridge width. My nose isn't the best shape for acetate glasses but my most recent pair are a good fit.

Been looking at the Cutler & Gross site to get an indication of where trends might be going and a whole lot of wire frames have appeared when in previous years they showed nearly all acetate for the opticals (as distinct from sunglasses). There are several in the style of big 90s wire frames www.cutlerandgross.com/shop/details/1317-03-gunmetal and I have over the past year or so seen a few people on TV wearing that style who were evidently fashionable people. (It looked slightly incongruous as new or very recently revived styles can and it took me a minute to realise they were being vintage rather than wearing really outdated glasses.) So I wouldn't be surprised if in the next couple of years those became a thing. If I were younger with more money and needing new glasses I would probably get some in that shape as a bit of a punt. The heavy frames have been around a long time and people will be tiring of them. (There was anoother on there that reminded me of the sort of squarish wire frames that a lot of middle aged women wore in the 90s. 90s style glasses feel like they might be the new theme.)

Bourgainvillia · 13/07/2018 20:46

Frameless aluminium tints for me this summer.

I like the minimalist look the best!

Ironfloor269 · 13/07/2018 21:11

Thanks @pennycarbonara and @bougainvilla.

I totally agree with you that the big, bold frames have been around for ages so I feel like we are on the cusp of a newer trend so I’m loathed to spend ££ on similar frames to what I already have (and which will most likely go out of fashion soon). Yet I’m reluctant to spend ££ on something completely different on the off chance that that trend might catch on...

Oh he perils of glasses. I would love to be rich enough to have a glasses wardrobe!

Processedpea · 13/07/2018 22:37

me too, i want those clear frames that that jurgen klopp wears \link{https://www.givemesport.com/1189547-jurgen-klopp-names-the-best-player-he-has-coached-so-far-in-his-career\here}

MsHomeSlice · 13/07/2018 23:00

@processedpea

A little squarer than Jurgens

The fitzroy ...we have a winner!!

and some others too! ...but go to glasses direct, and search "clear" they should all come up if that last link doesn't work.

PickAChew · 13/07/2018 23:12

The wire stuff doesn't work for me. Pale skin, dark hair, "striking" features, thick eyebrows. Even when narrow rectangular frames were in, I needed a thick arm and a bit of angle. I had some round ones in the mid 90s, when they were last in, and got shouts of harry Potter!

pennycarbonara · 13/07/2018 23:34

There are places online selling the actual frames (Oakley Pitchman R) for around the same price as several of those Glasses Direct frames. There are quite a few articles on his glasses saying which frames he's worn recently.

pennycarbonara · 13/07/2018 23:38

@PickaChew have you managed to find a style that works for you if there are drawbacks with both acetate nosepieces and wire frames? Clubmaster type styles that are a hybrid?

PickAChew · 13/07/2018 23:57

This is what I have right now. On my second pair and nearing 5 years with the style

Floisme · 14/07/2018 10:08

My last few pairs have been plastic, cats eye shape which I think is flattering on me but I I'm ready for a change and I'm definitely going to try on some wire ones this time. In fact I'll dig a few old, early noughties frames out of the cupboard and try them first. Also going to try bigger, more rounded plastic frames again.

However fashions in glasses are a juggernaut and change direction even more slowly than jeans. They're too big an investment to go out of fashion overnight. So I think the geeky look will be around for a few more years yet.

Ironfloor269 · 15/07/2018 15:02

Thanks so much for your replies.

I’ve already done one home trial from Glasses Direct and shortlisted a couple of frames.

Now, I’m going to do the second home trial with a few clear and wire rimmed frames, Fitzroy being one of them.

Had I not posted on here, I’d never have known that these styles are coming into fashion now.

So, thank you so much!
