Retinol use on sunny beach holiday

Hello,

Just looking for advice on whether I should drop the retinol from my routine while on a hot sunny beach holiday.

I use the ordinary granactive retinoid 5% nightly and factor 30 every day. When on holiday am I ok to keep as is, or should I stop altogether? Could also up to factor 50 or use a less intense retinoid (2%)?

I am middle aged, fairish skinned, usually tan easily with factor 15-30 depending on the sun.

Ah thank you all for explaining the Vichy ingredients and what they do - that’s really reassuring. I got confused between all the different acids!

I carried on using mine during a sunny holiday last year and my face went bright red and itchy despite rigorous application of factor 50 - had to use hydrocortisone cream to sort it out. So I’d exercise caution.

I am going to be away for 3 months (lucky me!) in the 🌞 and planning to stop the actives routine that I have spent 3years perfecting - however , I am worried that when I return i will have to put up with the nasty stages of flaky skin by reintroducing retinol again! What do people who live in hot all year round countries do???

could someone advise a brand of retinol or hydrolic acid and percentage strenght that you can buy over the counter....i really want to give it a try.thanks!

I used the ordinary retinoid and Resveratrol and ferulic without any problems until the first sunny days when I had a rash and the eczema.

I decided to stop for the summer.

Now it's only Moisture Surge/Hada Labo and a moisturiser/oil.

Just bumping this to see how it all went? Have been using weak Tretinoin since November, but will be at least two weeks in the sun this summer. I also don't want a brown body and a white face, so I think I will stop the tret in June and restart in September, and use Factor 30 on holiday to get a little colour.

Unless you all tell me different!

I’ve been using tret since August and carried in during my summer holidays (France and Turkey). Used factor 50 on my face. Didn’t have any adverse effects. Couldn’t face stopping and going through the flaky phase again.

The structural changes, dermal thickening etc only begin at 48 weeks so you really want to continue retinols for the year, IMO. Sunscreen is a good idea retinols or not. But actual increased photosensitivity is really only an issue in the first few months of starting retinols.

The other side effect associated with retinoid therapy is photosensitization, which normally occurs at the beginning of the therapy. Patients on retinoid therapy are advised to avoid excessive sun exposure and take precautionary measures (like use of sunscreens) for sun protection. However, after few months of therapy, the skin’s response to UV radiation returns to normal Source: Retinoids in the treatment of skin aging: an overview of clinical efficacy and safety

I think as long as you use a high spf, just dont take the retinol on hoilday with you, what do you think people do who live in a hot country? stay indoors all day.
