Watch etiquette question

Is it bad etiquette for ladies to wear a watch whilst in evening dress? I seem to recall my mother muttering something about how it’s considered rude to be worrying about the time during a social function? Is that right? I can’t recall. I don’t usually wear a watch in the evening. It is a nice one though...

Unless you are dining at the palace I wouldn't worry 😁😁

I've never heard that but have often thought myself that it's odd to wear a watch with evening dress.

To me the two main deciders would be:

  1. do you have a big obvious tan line? If so, wear a watch unless you've got a bracelet of about the right width that will stay in place. I think the tan line would be more obvious/unusual than the watch,

  2. do you feel weird or uncomfortable without a watch? If so, you'll probably be able to relax more if you do wear it.

My gran used to say the same. It's rubbed off, as I don't tend to wear a watch to anything semi-formal, but I don't think anyone would bat an eyelid nowadays.

My mum used to wear a 'cocktail watch' for dressy events. I've heard that you are not meant to wear one in your wedding day but not about formal events.
