Shampoo bar - where am I going wrong or are they just crap?

So I have been virtuous and switched to a shampoo bar for eco reasons. I chose a non-SLS one from Funky Soap as it had good reviews. After using it my hair looked greasier than if I hadn't washed it at all, almost as though I had rubbed my head with a bar of imperial leather and not rinsed! So I tried again today, rinsing with diluted cider vinegar and it looks dull, flat and feels dirty. I've read that your hair has to get used to them but I find this hard to believe and I don't feel that committed as to go through the pain barrier.

So is this just the deal with shampoo bars? Do I need to go for one with SLS in it? Has anyone had more success than me?

I use the Lush ones and am converted! Fantastic scent that I get wafts of all day, easy to use and last ages. Plus my hair is as clean as it was with normal shampoo.
My main motivation was reducing my use of plastic but I honestly prefer the product too. I’d say maybe try a different one?

The Funky Soap site has a page on how to use the shampoo bar. Have you read it?

sergeantmajor · 04/07/2018 16:10

No, I hadn't read it because I bought via Amazon but I've just checked it out now, thanks. It certainly encourages people to stick with it before seeing the benefits. I am a bit pessimistic as I haven't used SLS shampoos and silicone products for years and I have already tried the cider vinegar rinse, but I'll try the baking soda approach too. Seems like quite a lot of effort and commitment. I'll persevere if only for the sake of getting my money's worth!

... and I'll report back if there's an improvement!

How are you actually using the bar?

You need to rub it directly on your bonce.

The LUSH ones are amazing I have to amdit

Oopsy41 · 04/07/2018 16:14

I've found they leave my hair really greasy too and I've tried loads of different ones.

thefirstmrsdewinter · 04/07/2018 17:13

As far as I'm aware the Lush ones are not sls-free: uk.lush.com/article/dont-stress-about-sls

thefirstmrsdewinter · 04/07/2018 17:14

(The shampoo bars that is.)

Well, I said that I'd report back if there was an improvement... and there is!
In fact I feel massively guilty for slagging the product off. I've kept going with vinegar rinses and now it's looking pretty good, even without conditioner.
I wouldn't say that it is the best most shiny ever, but definitely good enough and hopefully if I keep going it will keep improving.
So who'd have thought? I'm a convert!

With the lush shampoo bar, do you need to use conditioner as well?

QuiteCleanBandit · 17/07/2018 19:16

I tried the Funky stuff and it was ghastly.

I’ve just switched to the new lLoreal silicon free shampoo but you need 10-15 pumps per shampoo so I’m wondering if I’ll go through it quickly. Are shampoo bars better than these shampoos do you think?

Deathraystare · 17/07/2018 19:49

On the Superdrug site there is a make call Hair O Oi or something. A lady on there recs the coconut oil one as she has had cancer and is now careful what she puts on her hair but they have other ones too.

AmethystMoon · 17/07/2018 20:13

cakietea I use the Lush conditioner bars with the shampoo bars, lasts ages!
