Tips for a messy bob - what products?

Hi all

I have quite thick but very soft hair and have just had it cut into what is meant to be a messy bob. If you have anything like my hair at all, what products do you use? When I've dried it it's a perfectly lovely bob and I've messed the back up with the drier so it's currently what I want, but I know when I've slept on it (or if I went out then in an hour or so) it will just look sleek again.

Thanks in advance!

Ooooh - that's interesting, this is exactly my problem. Thanks :-)

My hair is very soft, straight and flat. My hairdresser said I should stop using shampoo, just put a bit of apple cider vinegar on my scalp, scrub and rinse with hot water, then follow with cone-free conditioner and another hot water rinse.

It looks fine (I mean it doesn't look dirty or greasy) but the texture is different, it's more piecey and chunky and a bit stiffer. I don't wash my hair much anyway as it takes two or three days post-shampoo to look like anything, so at least I can clean it this way as much as I like and it never goes flat and soft.

You can also put those little pincurl clips in it, sort of twisting hair randomly and clipping it in an upward direction at the scalp. A blast with the dryer, backcomb with fingers and some spray, powder or wax.

Sounds like a good product

Crwban · 04/07/2018 06:40

thefirstmrsdewinter can you tell me what conditioner you use please?
Also, what do you mean by pincurl clips? how do you use them? I'm totally clueless with thin and flat hair that is straight in the front and kinked in the back.

Salt spray?

Crwban that's my age talking ('pincurl' indeed, does anyone even know what that is?), there are different varieties but something like the photos. You just sort of shove them in at the scalp aiming them toward the top of your head (if you put them high enough on your head you can sleep with them in no problem) so they make a little bump in the hair. You can also twist hair or curl it around your finger and clip etc, it should be messy and random. You can experiment with giving your hair a little spritz of water or spray first, or see if dry hair works best. It may take some practice to get it just how you want it.

If your hair has an uneven wave that's even easier, you just approximate the same pattern or depth of waviness in the front to match the back if that makes sense. You can leave the back as it is.

The Superdrug grapefruit conditioner is perfect (so far) and cheap as chips: www.superdrug.com/Hair/Hair-Treatments/Hair-Care-Oils/Superdrug-Extracts-Conditioner-Grapefruit-&-Papaya-400ml/p/709007

Thanks! Can't find these pins though! What are they called?

thefirstmrsdewinter · 04/07/2018 15:05

Pincurl/pin curl clips.

Crwban · 04/07/2018 15:47

God! You did say! Sorry - should have read properly. I've bought some and am going to give them a go.

So, gently twist and pin?
Or gently curl around fingers and pin?

thefirstmrsdewinter · 04/07/2018 16:41

No worries, I didn't know if that was the most up to date name for them but if you google it the right thing appears. Smile

This is a more precise and longwinded version of what I'm suggesting:

I wouldn't worry about getting it all uniform, just pin it in a messy curl or even just clip a bend in the hair. Imagine you're putting about 2" of hair in an n or s shape and then pinning to the scalp.

Depending on how messy you want it (poky ends, wavy ends, curled ends etc) you'll get a feel for what works after some practice.

Those bendy wand rollers will also work. You take a clump of hair and holding the roller against the scalp wind the hair around the wand until you can only just grasp the end, then twist to fix, leaving the end to poke out.

A bit of light backcombing with fingers can accentuate the waves. Salt spray, dry shampoo, root powder etc will give your hair more grab if it is too silky.
