Anyone posh enough to know what 'one' wears to polo?

Hi
Have got to spend a day at a polo match for dh's work. Assumethis really means drinking lots of champagne (oh no how awful!! How will I cope - oh yes I remember now I will haveto cope as we are taking ds)

What does 'one' wear to the polo? Is it similar to e.g. Ascot but minus hats?

Summer dress. Flattish shoes for stomping in the divots.

expatinscotland · 25/05/2007 14:15

I wore a Laura Ashley dress and DEFFO flats.

I wore a straw hat, but it was outside in a sunny climate.

Similar to Ascot is about right - summer dress, heels (but not too high, esp if it has been raining, or they do the treading in thing, some places still do it!), and a wrap in case it gets cold. Hat wouldn´t look out of place, but not necessary. Something to keep you warm is the crucial part - nothing worse than standing there freezing trying to chat and not being able to move somewhere warmer. Skirt not too short, esp not if windy. Sunglasses essential for a bit of a chance to look at other people without them knowing you are staring.....

You´ll have a fab time, it´s great fun!

Prob much more casual than ladies day at Ascot and the like
[jolly ho...]

have a nice time, hope ds will be allowed to take a psp or something to keep him busy.

Can't imagine office chat too interesting for him.

boo64 · 25/05/2007 14:20

ds is two so I find the idea of taking him ridiculous but we have no one to leave him with and dh is convinced it will be ok (it is a saturday so not a very worky thing)

Hmmm.

So would say skinny white trousers (ha am I stupid with a ds in tow!), smart ish sandals and a floaty tunic fit the bill or would it be too casual?

Thanks for your fab replies girls!!

floaty pattern top a must of ds is 2 as it will hide any spills or ice-cream dollops!

sorry I wouldn't suggest a psp for a 2year old - lol

have a lovely time.

expatinscotland · 25/05/2007 14:26

I would not wear white anything to a polo match, particularly after it's been raining.

choosyfloosy · 25/05/2007 14:34

White trousers and tunic perfect. Where is it? the only one i've been to was fairly casual.

Go for the poshest shades you can, the gleamiest hair and the jingliest jewellery. Then casual on the body.

NO fake tan.

forget the white trousers...

boo64 · 25/05/2007 15:35

Ok got slightly more info from dh and sounds quite casual and fun.

Still don't know what to bleeding wear though!!

Okay, it depends whether it's proper polo or not -i.e. if the people are there for the polo or to be seen at the polo.
If it's the former, jeans, flats and a nice top
If it's the latter, then much dressier and with totally inappropriate shoes if you want to fit in with everyone else.
HTH though I doubt it!

McDreamy · 25/05/2007 15:45

Wear as you would to a smart dinnre but without the to high heels!!! Polo is a great day out!

Sorry but I've just got to mention that at the one and only polo match I went to I watched Princes Charles, William and Harry play along with the American actor Tommy Lee Jones (which is quite a random combination) at Sandhurst. It was a great afternoon.

I wore uniform though so that doesn't really help except to say that you'll have fun

wabbit · 25/05/2007 15:46

Defo NOT white. Wedges are good, plus definitely take a sweater or wrap - we went to the Cartier a few years ago, I had a gorgeous dress, and it was so bleedin' cold and I ended up buying a huge sweatshirt from the Crew concession and wearing that over the top! (I'm all glamour, me).

So I would say nice slim trousers (not a pale colour), tunic, flatties/wedges (I wouldn't wear faltties but am a short arse) and wrap/cardi in case of British weather

Quootiepie · 25/05/2007 15:47

not heels, they get stuck in the mud and you look like a WAG.
