Shampoo for after swimming....

squirrelnutkins1 · 28/06/2018 13:45

Hi. Can anyone recommend a good shampoo for getting rid of chlorine after swimming please? The smell seems to stay on my hair even after washing so not sure if there's a special odour removal shampoo out there....? Thanks!

Any recommendations would be most welcome too.

I use Treseme usually which is good most of the time but can sometimes still smell the chlorine especially after blow drying my hair at the pool.

MorrisDancingViv · 28/06/2018 17:45

I use boots own brand one. They have one for coloured hair which was good when I was super blonde

Illegallyblonde123 · 28/06/2018 21:41

Just chatting to a friend who uses a coconut based shampoo by Palmers. It smells lovely.

CMOTDibbler · 28/06/2018 21:53

Boots swim and gym 3 in 1 - takes the smell out and looks after my hair nicely

squirrelnutkins1 · 28/06/2018 23:11

I saw the swim and gym conditioner in boots but they didn't have the shampoo. 🙄
Thanks for the recommendations. I've got curly frizz prone hair so really want something that will take care of my hair as well as get rid of the smell.

I’m a swimmer. 6km weekly govrnor take.

You’re looking for the holy grail...

I’m told that Paul Mitchell Clarifying Shampoo is the one to get. Although it’s pricey. I have got Superdrug Active 3in1 at the moment and it seems to be doing well so far..

I’m going to get the Paul Mitchell and decant it into my swim shampoo holder and use it only after I swim to see if that does the trick. I think it’s better than other shampoos.

Apparently, chlorine bonds to the hair, forming a barrier so nothing gets at it. No moisturiser/conditioner nothing. The chlorine then chips off and weakens th hair. It’s vital to break the bond between the chlorine and the hair as soon as possible

I was also told the Tresemee is the worst thing for hair as it too coats the hair shaft preventing any moisture being put in.

Hissy · 28/06/2018 23:46

My hair is curly too, so the stripping of the chlorine will work, then add palmers leave in or similar and leave to dry naturally if poss.

I rate Bumble and Bumble Sunday shampoo. I use it after swimming and my hair is better than on a normal day. Don't notice a lingering smell either

7YearsOfBlood · 29/06/2018 07:59

I use Triswim (got it on Amazon). I use the Triswim shower gel as well because I could still smell chlorine on my arms late in the day, even with strong smelling shower gels like tea tree.

squirrelnutkins1 · 29/06/2018 13:26

@7YearsOfBlood ah good idea. I'm the same with my skin. Will have a look x

@LambChopsMcGee it's about £20 isn't it? Would you say its worth that?

squirrelnutkins1 · 29/06/2018 13:28

@Hissy I've bought the Superdrug one today so will give it a whirl next week when I go

It is about £20 yeah. I'm not the sort of person who spends that much on shampoo normally (I buy Pantene when it's on special).

I am on my second bottle now, and it seems to last really well. I only use it after swimming -- or if I swim multiple times in a week I sometimes use it two out of three times. I asked my hairdresser about shampoos for after swimming when I was going all the time (most days) a few years ago and they recommended this. My hair was turning to straw then and I've not had the problem since.

I do also wear a swim cap, which stops my hair getting too saturated with chlorinated water.

Not sure if B&B do a mini of that one. They do of a few others I have seen.

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 29/06/2018 14:01

Try a weak solution of vitamin c crystals disolved in plain water to rinse your hair and body with after swimming and then shampoo/soap as normal. This is what we were told to do when our daughter (competitive swimmer) developed a chlorine allergy. The vitamin somehow bonds with the chlorine and removes it.

Hissy · 29/06/2018 15:18

That looks fab! I'll give that a go when the Superdrug one runs out :D

Hissy · 29/06/2018 15:19

McCavity Where do you get Vitamin C crystals?

squirrelnutkins1 · 29/06/2018 15:34

@LambChopsMcGee can you use b&b on highlighter hair?

OP posts:
Illegallyblonde123 · 29/06/2018 17:23

Ah interesting to hear about Treseme. I’ve used it for quite some time and it’s good value but perhaps it time for change.

Do people find swimming hats work? Personally I can’t get on with them, find them uncomfortable and my hair seems to somehow get tangled more so that just tying it back or leaving it free. My hair gets just as wet as it does going underwater. Any recommendations?

LambChopsMcGee · 29/06/2018 22:30

No idea about highlights, sorry!

Illegallyblonde When I first started wearing a swim cap I used to put a little conditioner to help it on. I also found the latex hats easier than silicone, so maybe try a few? I've got a pretty big head and long hair at the moment and manage ok. I tie my hair in a bun first, or a folded over ponytail

LambChopsMcGee · 29/06/2018 22:32
Grin

Hope you like it Hissy

My DDs are club swimmers and their hair get sticky and shiny with the chlorine (mine does too but it's short so not so noticeable). Our hairdresser recommended washing their hair monthly with fairy liquid. I suspect the high pH breaks the bonds between the hair and the chlorine. It does transform their hair when I use it.

ScaredPAD · 29/06/2018 22:34

Oh gosh. Ive been swimming about 3 months and have dry frizzy hair.... and using treseme.... i cant afford v expensive but had assumed the 3 in 1 wouldnt be any good for me as i usually do need a sepaarate decent conditioner.

We also have palmers leave in conditioner (brought online as couldnt find in the supermarket. Where sells it!?)

Illegallyblonde123 · 30/06/2018 20:22

Ah thanks LambChops. Great recommendation. Will give it a go if I’m doing a bit of (rare) serious swimming.

bassackwards · 30/06/2018 20:27

What you need is Ultra Swim shampoo. I used it when I swam competitively, so in the pool almost every day. It's gentle and moisturising.

squirrelnutkins1 · 07/07/2018 08:48

I liked the Superdrug one. Smells nice and hair feels soft 👍🏻
