Could someone (who knows about chemicals) please look at this list of ingredients

I bought this shampoo on the back of a recommendation on here but I can't find the thread now. I need something without sodium chloride (salt) as it's for use after a 12-wk blow dry. I checked and couldn't see it on this list but it's just arrived and on the back of the bottle sodium chloride is listed as the 4th ingredient! Unless it's got another chemical name? I've had a quick google to see if it's called anything else but other than salt, I don't think so. Am I right?

I don’t see sodium chloride. I see sodium other things. That’s not salt though. Does your shampoo need to be sodium free or salt free?

Noonelikesfruitcake · 27/06/2018 20:21

Just going off my A level chemistry about a million years ago here, but sodium chloride is a salt. Ammonium chloride listed in those ingredients, would also be a salt.
Might have different properties to sodium chloride obvs. So I've been no help at all, I'm sure!

MrsFluffytail · 27/06/2018 20:24

Chemistry teacher here! Ammonium chloride is very different to sodium chloride although they are both classed as salts.
I think OPs use of word salt is colloquial rather than chemical.
No sodium chloride listed there although there are both sodium and chloride ions in the shampoo.

Thanks, yes it's sodium chloride (aka salt) that I'm particularly trying to avoid as it breaks down the keratin so the treatment wouldn't last as long.

Thanks again I'll get on to the supplier now.

Oh I’m reading your post properly now, your bottle is different to what you’ve posted. Aha. Sorry, missed that.

It says lower sulphate shampoo in description op,not sulphate free.
Salts strip hair badly but unfortunately are used in most over the counter hair products to create a lather Hmm

When you've had colour perm or straightening in your hair a shampoo with sulphates in will strip what's been put into the hair ie colour or plastics after a twelve week blow dry.

The salon you had it done at should have recommended a sulphate free shampoo and conditioner to go with the treatment they used in your hair.
Any really good salon will have a range to go with the treatment. However lots of clients tend to decline the purchase due to it being of higher cost. Hmm

The problem with this is that clients spend a fair amount having the treatments done and then use low grade aftercare which shortens the life of the treatment.

I'm laughing at the sales blurb.

"....this natural shampoo....."

I think you’re confusing sulphate and sodium, what

kshaw · 27/06/2018 20:59

@whattheactualbleep it's used to thicken up the sodium lauryl sulphate that creates the lather not
Actually create the lather - in a job many many moons ago I worked in a development lab making toiletries. Good to know if ever have runny toiletries or washing up liquid.
That ingredients list doesn't show sodium chloride

whattheactualbleep · 27/06/2018 21:04

Kshaw that's interesting.

Can you tell me what's used for pearlising shampoos?

macnab · 27/06/2018 21:06

I appreciate that low sulphate shampoo is a good thing, and I will still use this bit not fir the 12 weeks after my 12-week blow dry Smile for that I definitely need salt/sodium chloride free shampoo. And yes I could buy the specific aftercare products from the hairdresser but this was working out cheaper!

Just to be clear, that shampoo does not list sodium chloride in its ingredients.
