Roots in between an expensive colour- rant!

Hi,

Just an irrational rant. My hair grows quickly and I’ve been quoted 150 for colour and todo roots in between for 100. It sounds so much but can I just get away with doing my own roots in between when I’ve had a fancy colour? I’m tempted to go with my cheaper hairdresser as at least I can use root touch but a bit worried that a better job might mean extra costs in the long run! What would you do?

I let mine grow out because of this. I had tried roots spray, and that coloured powder and it all made my hair look like straw.

Now I’ve let the silver out I’m much happier, my hair is in fab condition and really glossy. It’s also not as silver as I had thought it was as all I saw were the silver roots when it was growing out. Now it just looks like I have silver highlights.

Maybe try a non permanent colour, and let it go!

QuiteCleanBandit · 26/06/2018 17:55

Ask what colour they use .
Mine is 7 and I do it myself for £4 .
£100 Confused absolute rip off !
As is £150

WipsGlitter · 26/06/2018 18:30

Agree that's a rip off!

AHedgehogCanNeverBeBuggered · 26/06/2018 18:32

I've always used box colour in between, just on the roots - it works brilliantly. What colour do you use? Maybe we can recommend a good at-home due for between salon sessions.

AHedgehogCanNeverBeBuggered · 26/06/2018 18:32

*dye

AlbertaSimmons · 26/06/2018 18:38

Crikey that's a lot. I have mine done every three weeks and am about to start the process of gradually going lighter as I'm naturally dark so the show through of grey is really noticeable and my hair grows really quickly. My friend has recommended the spray in root covering colour and I'm going to give that a try first. I pay £40 whatever I have done.

Eesha · 26/06/2018 18:47

So this will be 150 for complete highlights and lowlights. It’s just I’m worried I can’t maintain. Will be coming to house to do it

Highlights/lowlights are more expensive and look far better than block colour. I wouldn’t risk diy.

NormskiNamechange · 26/06/2018 18:54

I think it depends on what colour.

Oswin · 26/06/2018 19:11

Doing roots when you have highlights is hard.
If you were to have ombre or balyaged just past ears then that would be alot easier to maintain.

poorbuthappy · 26/06/2018 19:25

That's for it to be done at home??????
Bloody hell. Cut and colour at home £40 round here!

SableStar · 26/06/2018 19:47

Yes! You’ve been given an extremely expensive quote for a home visit!
Shop around a bit more.
I go to a local salon and am charged 60- ish for a whole head! :)

Sengah · 26/06/2018 20:13

QuiteCleanBandit · 26/06/2018 20:14

Thats at home !🤤
Blimey I thought you were going to a top celeb London salon !
Seriously shop around -I have half head plus roots ,cut and blowdry for £72 .
Roots in between is £27 but I tend to do it myself for £4 .

Eesha · 26/06/2018 20:23

Tbh it is celeb salonist in London! But freelance too. They came well recommended but by some wealthy people I know. I just feel like if he can work his magic, it might be worth it! I just don’t want to keep having my roots done at such a high price

I have thick dark brown hair that grows really quickly and the grey roots start showing after 3 to 4 weeks. Tried the Loreal spray in between but would never be able to do the layers properly with that as my hair is so thick but i hate being grey
After seeing Ginnys comment i took a look at mine in the mirror and there are still some brown streaks amongst the grey so maybe mine would be like highlights if i grew it out. Not sure im ready but two of my hair appointments this year............one was almost affected by a power cut after high winds back in Jan and the one after that was right during the Beast from the East so had to struggle there in the snow. Its these kinds of things that im starting to get fed up with. Its every six weeks and seems to come around so quickly. Can grey look funky rather than old?

FraxinusExcelsior · 27/06/2018 02:16

I highly recommend this from Superdrug for touching up mid brown roots which have grey in.

It's the semi permanent, which crucially doesn't fade to orange tones and seems to last as long as a permanent dye.

Roots in between an expensive colour- rant!
Biologifemini · 27/06/2018 06:48

Just buy a box of hair dye and do your roots yourself.
You just need to ask your hairdresser what number colour you are (I am 6).
The chemicals are exactly the same and have been for the past 40 odd years.
The key is application. That is what you are paying the hairdresser for. Certainly not the hair dye itself which is very cheap.

SarahBeeney · 27/06/2018 07:00

I pay £50 for a whole head of highlights with my mobile hairdresser in London. That price is very steep!

Tonicwaterandgin · 27/06/2018 07:09

If you have highlights and lowlights done by the hairdresser, then you put a block colour on the roots in between, you're just going to have a solid stripe of colour instead of your roots. When the stylist does highlights and lowlights, they usually leave out strands of your own hair between meaning you have lots of different tines in the hair but you will gradually lose that effect by putting a block colour on. I work in a salon and you need to be very careful doing this - it means the hairdresser is then having to colour the solid stripe of home tint out as well as blending in your natural roots. You won't get as nice a colour result from the hairdresser.

Eesha · 27/06/2018 07:36

So sounds like I need to get cheaper hairdresser to do everything. I have been looking but bonus here is that he does home visits. No faffing with babysitting or getting anywhere
