Skincare in 40's

MrsBlondie · 26/06/2018 09:42

Mid-40s and currently my skin is the worst its ever been - spots thanks to hormones.

Anyone any recommendations for good skincare for this age? All seems aimed at teenagers if you have spots.

The ordinary and Clinique have a good line for mature skin

MrsBlondie · 26/06/2018 10:14

Thanks. Mature skin oh god I'm getting old Sad

😦 no I didn't mean it like that...

trigger2 · 26/06/2018 17:33

OP what’s your skin type? I’d go gentle on spots, cleanse, moisturise and spf. You could add in something like la roche posay effaclar spit treatment. For anti aging maybe a retinol product to use at night.

Don’t start all new products at once though or you won’t be able to work out which doesn’t agree, if this happens. My skin at 45 is much more sensitive and works best with things like Cetaphil, Avene, LRP. I don’t know whether it’s the start of hormonal changes or what but I do have to be careful, and I accept some pimples at that time of the month :-/

trigger2 · 26/06/2018 17:34

Spot treatment - not spit 😆

Twofishfingers · 26/06/2018 17:37

I really like Nutrogena Hydroboost as a cleanser, it helps with hormonal spots, and also la roche posay effaclar spot treatment. I use a spf 30 moisturiser by Simple. www.boots.com/simple-kind-to-skin-plus-moisture-cream-spf30-protecting-50ml-10164560?storeId=11352&catalogId=28501. I use Astral cream at bedtime which helps for mature skins I think!!

Smeller89 · 26/06/2018 17:51

I am 40 and have terrible hormonal spots at the moment - they keep appearing in the same place. I have just bought this eucerin product after doing some research. As in, bought it yesterday so a bit soon to review but I'll update!

trigger2 · 26/06/2018 18:02

Ooh that looks interesting Smeller !

MrsBlondie · 26/06/2018 20:36

Thanks all. Think skin type is combination bit getting less oily as I get older.

OP posts:
CoconutAmericano · 26/06/2018 21:32

Might try this myself Smeller. It certainly looks promising.

I too suffer with occasional hormonal acne. I honestly think that no matter how well i look after my skin (and i really look after my skin), eat well etc.. if it’s hormones causing the spots there is only so much I can do to limit them occurring.

Fedupforties · 26/06/2018 21:42

The Ordinary brand on cult beauty.co.uk Amazing serums which are inexpensive. I use 3 different types for wrinkles and spots!

agreed but this is so depressing Sad

I know, it’s shit Sad

Fedupforties · 26/06/2018 22:37

I can highly recommend a Lumie Clear light for spots. Between the ages of 21 and 43 I have had 4 rounds of Roaccutane. Since buying a Lumie Clear light in Dec 2015 ( hormonal spots were getting worse again) I have not had a problem with spots at all ( hallelujah!). If I feel the odd one coming up ( linked to my cycle) I can kill it with this light before it really develops. Can't recommend it enough 😍

BagelGoesWalking · 26/06/2018 23:09

Personally, I'd avoid Clinique except for their Take the Day Off Cleansing Balm. They'll try to sell you stuff for acne which is full of drying alcohol. Like others, La Roche Posay, Avène and CeraVe are good brands. Go for gentle, creamy cleansers not harsh, foaming ones. A better hydrated skin will help but you could look at things like Azelaic Acid and Mandelic Acid to target the hormonal spots - The Ordinary or Garden of Wisdom brand from Victoria Health.

Add a hydrating toner, look at the 7skins method. It will plump up your skin and help reduce fine lines and make your skin lovely and soft. I like Pyunkang Yul Essence Toner (Beauty and Seoul UK stock it) and Etude House Soon Jung (eBay from high rated Korean sellers like Iamlove-shop). Very different from Western astringent toners. Look for Hyaluronic Acid, glycerin and without alcohol or witch hazel.

Have a similar problem myself.
Tried Clinique 'the one specially for oils problem skin). The reviews were good. It was 'ok'. I still had spots come through though. And it felt like a medical procedure because of the smell. I guess drying lcohol like pp said.
I'm now trying out clarinet range for oily / combo skin. Seems to be working well (after a week) and feels like a real treat. A little expensive but not excessive. (And I scoured ebay to get it a little cheaper).

intelligentPutty · 26/06/2018 23:23

*clarins !! ;)

Catsandkids78 · 26/06/2018 23:25

Join the Dr Sam Bunting Skincare Club facebook group and we will help sort you out .Amazing community .

Don’t bother with any overpriced clarins / Clinique /7 steps . Dr Bunting recommends using no more than 6 products ie three morning three night max .

Also check out her YouTube videos xx

Catsandkids78 · 26/06/2018 23:26

LRP as mentioned and Avene she is also big fans of ! Good shouts

MrsBlondie · 27/06/2018 09:37

Thanks all. Will take a look at all mentioned.

Yes, catsandkids has a great idea re Dr Sam Bunting. She talks a lot of sense and is very successful.

Also, look at your cleanser. If you're using something with a high ph, is foaming and leaves your skin feeling tight, then you need to change it. (dr Sam has just brought out her own!). Just doing that can make a huge difference. That and extra hydration!

FiddlesticksRiddlesticks · 27/06/2018 10:59

I'm in my 40s and I've got fine lines, bigger lines on my forehead and occasional spots during time if the month. But I do have good skin (freckles aside).

My routine:
Oil cleansing method. You could use plain old olive oil. I use a mix of avocado, sweet almond oil and a teeny bit of castor (when I remember to add it which isn't often.

I have an old pump bottle that I got free from a plastic bottles company when I asked for a free sample, I add the oils, no set ratio as the oils I use can be used at 100% each, and I've used this since my late 30's. I add a dollop of one.a dollop of another, and pop on the lid.

I use cheap flannels from Wilkos, 35p each, massage oil into your face for a minute, rinse the flannel in hot water (hotter than warm but not too hot!) and take off oil. I rinse and take the oil off 3 times(only one application of oil, 3 hot cloth wipe offs, rinsing the flannel after each wipe off) and it's so much better than standard cleanser and waaayyyy cheaper.

I finish with some avocado oil, supposedly good for aging 😀

I've no doubt I look my age. My looks, hair and clothes see to that, but in terms of skin, I am happy. It's about the only aspect of me that I like. I spent lots of money up to then on skincare, but my skin has never looked better, even better than in my 20s. But I'm heading into perimenopause so all that might change 😏

FiddlesticksRiddlesticks · 27/06/2018 11:00

by finish, I mean as a serum to leave on your skin after cleansing.

Olive oil on your face...shudders. Well whatever floats your boat lol.

Yes PH is SO important - very good point - there are some great insta accounts which PH test popular brands cleansers - very surprising results.

I have just got Dr Sams new cleanser which I love (£16 for 200ml) through a friend who got two pre launch- I've only used it three times, but really enjoying it - I also love the LRP Toleriane cleaner.

I'd focus on getting a solid vitamin C and sunscreen in your AM routine.

And hydrating serum and a retinol into the evening routine.

Looking forward to you joining us on the facebook community , I've made great friends on it and everyone is so helpful and knowledgeable .
