Please tell me what you do if you are getting greys, highlights, toner, lowlights? I can't find anything that looks good!

My hair is brown, dark mousey I would say. I am getting more & more greys by the week it seems and I want to cover them but what is the best way?
Last year I spent a year having a brown tint which looked ok until it started to grow out and then for some reason it looked almost orange against my natural hair. So I had orange, then mousey roots with wiry greys!

This summer I thought I'd try highlights so had a full head done 6 weeks ago. Looked nice but now it's hideous as mousey grey roots have appeared and again the highlighted hair looks orange. Also the blonde now looks too blonde and not sure it suits my skin whicj is olive.

It's time to cover the roots again but what shall I ask for? More highlights? A tint just on the roots?

What is the best way of keeping on top of the greys? How often do other people have their roots done and how much does it cost?

I know the simplest thing would be to embrace the grey but i'm not ready for that yet.

Can anyone help please?

I use henna, but I like the red tint it gives my hair. The roots aren't as obvious as when using a box dye - I re-henna once a month. The bonus is that it's great for the condition of your hair. You can buy henna with indigo mixed in for browner shades (Lush 'Brun') or simply buy indigo powder and mix it with henna powder, but there will always be a degree of auburn.

I have a very dark blonde hair which is now 60% grey, its a very salt and pepper colour. I like the grey and am gradually growing it out rather than colouring it, but to hide the obvious growth i have a half head of foils every 12 weeks, the hairdresser uses a mixture of 4 colours from ash blonde to my original colour to mask the grey. Once its all grown through i will just have blonde highlights so my face dosent look so pale. My hair is a long bob and with the foils and a cut and dry it costs me £65.

I have balayage

LikeARedBalloon · 25/06/2018 20:42

Another who has balayage....I always used to have highlights but got tired of the line of regrowth and the striped look (no matter how natural they tried to make it!) Love my hair now though!

I have medium brown hair and used to have highlights. When I had a few greys, they mixed in nicely but when they really started coming through, it looked awful.
I found a bix dye that matches my natural colour and I use it religiously every 4 weeks. I have learnt to do it myself so that I can afford to do it so often and not have to live with the greys. I changed my lipstick to balance the change from blond to brunette and I wear red or dark pink now.

Tell me more please balayage. Don't you still get a problem with regrowth though?

Maraki this sounds like what I need to do. WHen you first did, were you putting the box dye over the highlights you already have? Did this work ok? I'm a bit worried about doing a colour myself over the top of existing highlights in case it goes orange (or green!)
I would like a few highlights still as I found the all over brown tint I had last year a bit harsh.
I certainly need to find something cheaper though as I can't afford hairdresser colour every 6 weeks.

I did a box dye for the first time over the weekend... couldn't believe how easy it was. I used a John Frieda colour (recommended by a hairdresser) and bought the brush you use for roots separately. I'm really pleased with the results and will, as pp says, start doing it every four weeks!

I use Majirel and touch up my roots along my hairline every week as I have sections of pure white. I then go over it all every month to prevent it looking brassy.

Very high maintenance but economical because I just mix up a tiny bit for the weekly job.

If you want to go over blonde you will need to add red back in and then you can go over that with a more neutral brown the next time you dye it. When I have covered over blonde I have used a 5,45 shade and then the next time gone over it with something close to my shade - 5.3.

If you have a lot of white and want a natural brown you need to add gold (which is .3 after the level) so light golden brown is 6,3 and dark golden brown is 4,3. etc.

However I am getting sick of it and have been looking at ’grombre Instagram’. It makes you stop and think what could be hiding under the dye....

Also it might be worth considering having your highlights tinted grey and seeing if you like it.

I gave up dying mine, always ended up brassy looking when tried to go lighter , I didn't suit the warm tones so just let the grey come in for 6 months then chopped it all off ! 3 years later it's just past shoulders, I don't think it ages me and love the freedom

itsaldramarama · 26/06/2018 17:02

I was originally v dark brown

Because you don't have the highlight dye right to the roots for balayage it gives a more natural regrowth and you don't get that line at the scalp like with highlights.

colouringinagain · 27/06/2018 20:26

I'd speak to your hairdresser and tell her (or him) what you've put here. They may have suggestions re adapting the colours.

I have a mousy dark brown hair with a lot of grey/white. I have a high lift tint (blonde but not peroxide) and a medium caramel brown. Grow-out isn't too bad as my hair is fine and does lighten in the sun. Mine's quite short so balayage wouldn't really work, but could work for you!
