Teenage skin care routine and products

What is good for their skin, dd has started to get spots on her forehead but I am not sure what she should use. It was clearasil in my day but that would seem too harsh.

My DD just uses water and a flannel to pat her face dry then applies a moisturising cream (diprobase) as contrary to what you would think it's better to hydrate the skin than use drying products.

Also if you click on advance search and look for teen spots or similar there are lots of threads with names of washes if that is what you prefer. Clearasil is not recommend these days as too drying.

In our house we love Body Shop, bit pricey but lasts ages and is totally worth it. There are lots of different ranges to suit skin types and the staff are usually very helpful and lovely. If you can get to an outlet one then it’s so cheap! Xx

acornsandnuts · 24/06/2018 22:26

Dd used the tea tree wash from the body shop. However she didn’t get much relief and eventually went to our GP who was lovely and prescribed cream and tablets. Not a first resort but I wish I’d took her sooner having now known how great they are.

My kids rate Superdrug Tea Tree cleanser and Lemon cleanser. When I can't get to Superdrug I go for Simple or Neutrogena.

I would totally recommend the Nip Fab Teen Breakout pads for hormonal skin (That I still haven't escaped).

Ds uses the Sam Farmer face wash and moisturiser. Highly recommended.

dungandbother · 24/06/2018 22:37

Boring but wash morning and night TWICE especially if make up is worn.
Then a quick sweep with clearasil lotion followed by an appropriate moisturiser - Aveeno blue lid compensates for the drying effect of clearasil.

Get the make up off and deep cleanse the pores. Splash cold water. Moisturise.

Clearasil spot cream in moderation

Fresh towels every few days, ditto pillow case. Keep hair off face.

Good luck.

Tea tree, witch hazel and charcoal face wash from Boots - £5 or £6, but it lasts. We tried lots of different things over the years with DDs but this stuff works wonders. Even from the first time she used it, she was saying that her face felt better.

emmskie03 · 24/06/2018 22:42

If you do want to try the Nip Fab pads they are on offer in Superdrug!

DD uses La Roche Posay Efflacur face wash in the evening and just plain water to wash in the morning.

Applies La Roche Posay Efflacur Duo cream in the morning and a cream the doctor prescribed called Duac in the evening.

Took a few weeks but completely sorted her skin and it's now glowing. Lots of people recommended the range on here. No point trying all these teen products that actually dry the spots and skin out, making the skin produce more oil to compensate.

Hard to know of course if it's just one of the creams that is effective but too scared to stop one to see! Definitely think it's the combination of the 2 actually as La Roche Posay is a moisturiser as well and has made her skin lovely condition. Do ask the doctor to prescribe a cream for your dd before it gets any worse, and try La Roche Posay, worth every penny imo!

Thank you for your replies, this morning her spots had cleared up. They mostly seemed to be under the skin. I can’t decide between a good routine or just leave her be. I am worried that the wrong product may aggravate her skin.

My skin is good and can handle that I usually grab any product that is on offer. My skincare Is all mix and match.

I agree to la Roche Effacleur wash. I use that. TWICE. Sorry about the shouty twice but the first wash gets make up off. The second cleans my skin.

That alone doesn't keep hormonal chin spots under control but the clearasil lotion sweep absolutely does.

Followed by blue aveeno. Deep moisture.

The wash is the only slightly expensive item - but it lasts ages.

Doseydots · 26/06/2018 07:01

La Roche effacleur is on offer in boots, I will give it a try. I understand your washing twice dung, I do that myself.

We have Nivea in the blue pot, I think this would be a good moisturiser.

Effaclar is 25% off in boots. We have one in the bathroom and one in the downstairs loo. Dd uses it twice a day with the Effaclar duo cream and it's made a big difference in a week. My older dds both had acne and took pills so I expect that will happen to her in the next couple of years but the Effaclar and a vit c and zinc tabket every day is helping for now.

Jorah · 26/06/2018 07:08

I really wouldn't use nivea or dioribase. They are far too heavy.

BrigitsBigKnickers · 26/06/2018 07:39

My DD is 19 and has endured bad skin on chin nose and forehead since she started puberty. She take antibiotic medication and was recommended ruaccatane as it was pretty bad- refused this due to horror stories of the side effects and also you have to be on the pill which she can't take due to migraines.

She has used the effacleur stuff with some success and was about to go down the chemical skin peel route when someone on MN mentioned dermaflannel

Totally miraculous!

Apparently one of the main reasons for acne is when the skin doesn't shed the top layer- using the flannel regularly followed by a light moisturiser and strangely enough- sudocreme overnight, has really sorted out the problem. She still gets the odd spot but they and much smaller and clear up quickly.

Jorah · 26/06/2018 07:53

My dd wasn't on the pill when she took Roaccutane

BrigitsBigKnickers · 26/06/2018 18:12

Strange- The dermatologist DD saw said she couldn't prescribe roaccatane unless she was on the pill as it is very harmful to a foetus should she become pregnant. Our doctor also said the same thing.

Jorah · 26/06/2018 18:29

Yes it is very harmful, but dd was 15, and wasn't sexually active.

Doseydots · 26/06/2018 21:12

brigs that flannel sounds amazing, I am thinking of buying myself one
